My New Sturgeon Shanty Build
« on: Aug 15, 2014, 06:59 AM »
Hey guys, I wish that I had a picture of my own from this winter to start things off, but I unfortunately do not.. I know that this is not exactly the prime time to post this, but I figured I'd give it a whirl anyways.  So let's  see a view of your spearing "office". Any pictures of the outside, inside, or anything inbetween would be awesome!

I got into spearing two years ago and have been hooked ever since! I will be building a 4x6 this fall and cant wait to get it ready to go! If any of you have suggestions on  a layout, let me know. Thanks!

CI

I did find a picture of the small, redneck little wood stove that I put together for my house out of a .50 Cal ammo can. It's small, and it heats things up inside my current uninsulated 4x8 really easily, so I cant even imagine a 4x6 that is well insulated..

Here she is in all her beauty:

Clear_Ice, I'm here with ya, aug.15th thinking about ice fishing and spearing. Temps overnight were in the high 40's, suns out now maybe it will warm up. That wood stove looks good with these temps right now. I had my shack out in my wife's rummage sale and still have it on the trailer, I'll get a pic later today.

After months of hee-hawing around, I finally pulled the trigger and got building.  5x8 in size, mostly because my trailer is only 5x8.  I only got started this last weekend, and was done completely by myself, so don't harass me to much about my lack of progress.

2x10 runners, with 3/4 plywood floor.  Spear hole on the far side is 36"x57".  Walls are 2x4 ripped in half.  I intend on adding a few fish hole buddy covers at some point.

I was able to get 2 windows and steel sheeting done on the walls, but unable to get pics because it started raining on me.

1" thick styrofoam of some kind.  I'm hoping a buddy heater will be enough.  If not, then maybe a blue flame heater.

Too bad spearing is only legal here for 2 weeks, and only for sturgeon.  It's going to pull double duty as a regular jigging shack as well.

Are you going make a panel you can put over your spearing hole to help keep out the cold and wind when you're not spearing?  I was thinking of something like a piece of plywood with foam glued to the bottom that you can drop down, kinda like an access panel to get into the attic of a house.  If you do I'm sure it'll help you keep it warm.

I'm going to cover the spear hole with a 3/4" plywood hinged door.  It's on the to do list.  I've been struggling to find time to get back on it with all the rain, job, and shorter daylight.

Looking good! I was wondering how you were going to finish the outside corners and saw that in a pic. What's next, the insulation??

Insulation, hole covers, spearing hatch, carpet, and paint to blackout the interior.  Then it will be ready, I hope.

Just going to screw plywood over the windows for spearing.  Maybe put some weather strip between if necessary.

Put hinges on the plywood so that you can open them if you are just ice fishing, or do you plan on spearing only?? :icefish:

It's going to be dual purpose.  I'll think about hinging some "shutters" but I'm unsure if I have room enough to open them completely.  It's only a spearing shack for a max of 2 weeks, so it will be used much more for jigging.

Heck, if it's just for 2 weeks, just screw them on until spearing is over and take them off until next spearing season!  Good luck and tight lines! ;D

I got my insulation installed over the weekend, but forgot to get pictures.  Anyway, I used 1" EPS foam sheets between the studs, secured in place by running a bead of canned spray foam around the perimeter.  I read somewhere that EPS has an R value around 4 per inch.  So I have an R4-ish shack.  I went with EPS because it was less than half the cost of extruded foam,  like DOW blue foam sheet.
