Getting started making decoys
« on: Jul 22, 2014, 12:50 PM »
I want to start making my own decoys. What are some of the necessities to getting started in the right direction? Paint, type of wood, etc.

Use cedar, I use CS coating systems jig and lure paint and aluminum flashing for fins.

I went to a big box store and bought white cedar spindles, seconds, @ .50 each. I use the ends and throw the middles in the wood stove. I prime my dekes with exterior paint also from the big box store. Ask for mistakes and don't worry about the color as you will put a finish coat on it. fins can be cut from dog food or soup cans. Get a good carving knife and keep it sharp, don't pull the knife towards you, always away. Have fun.

Here's a good tutorial to give you an idea how to do it.
 http://mi-darkhouse.org/Site/articles/holmes_buildingafishdecoy.htm
 Found on the MDAA site.

One of these would also help.
 http://www.jannsnetcraft.com/lead-melters-tools/010774018064.aspx
Or you can just purchase a ladle and melt lead over your own heat source.
Make sure you're in a well ventilated area, when melting the lead.

Small eyelets to hang decoy from are also needed. Can also find them at the Netcraft site.
Also a source of lead is needed. Can melt old duck decoy weights, fishing weights, etc.

Cedar is probably the best choice for wood. Basswood is mentioned alot, but tends to crack and absorb water,
 if not sealed really well.

Hope this helps some. Good Luck!
