Auger floats?
« on: Mar 12, 2014, 08:56 PM »
Thinking about the size of the Vexilar floats, which got me to thinking, why not use a piece of pool noodle slipped over the auger shaft to keep it from sinking if it got disconnected from the drill?

Here is a little spreadsheet that I worked up. So according to the bathroom scale, I need 10" of 3.5" pool noodle to float my auger and drill extension. I figure I will put as much as I can on it for factor of safety and to account for dings and missing pieces.

I only need 2" to carry the weight of the transducer.

What do you guys think about it?

just take into consideration that when the auger comes loose it will do it with the speed of gravity. The momentum may carry the auger below the surface of the ice. It may not come straight back up.
It is easier to make a disk larger than the auger diameter.

Great idea.  Never would have thought of it myself.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

While drilling you have a lot of slush that has to go somewhere. It will most likely tear out the pool noddle.

just use the ice master auger adaptor or make some thing yourself like it using bungee cord. just tie knots onto the ends of the bungee cord and after running it thru a solid plate that fits just under a rim in your adaptor.
