Black Hills Ice- How long do we have left?
« on: Mar 08, 2014, 08:54 PM »
Tommorow is supposed to be 65 and this week is around 40.  How much longer do you guys think we have? I think it would be kind of handy if people reported some of the ice conditions they find on here so everyone can be safe and enjoy some late season ice fishing during this nice weather.  Today, at Pactola the ice was about 12" over by the south boat launch out towards the main lake.  Vetrans Point and the North Boat ramp looked to have some pretty rough areas.

A friend and I started our season on Roubaix and we want to end it there. On St. Patty's day. Hoping that lakes like Roubaix, Sylvan, Iron Creek and maybe even Deerfield are good through then. The extra sunlight isn't going to help the cause, but I think a big part depends on if it cools off at night. I'm crossing my fingers and hoping for ice through at least St. Patricks Day.

went to stockade today and the ice was getting rotten, a little water along the shore but still 18 inches of ice in the back of the lake

Drilled some holes today and the ice came out in cubes.

Yup. Some of the holes I drilled in the north marina in pactola came up in chunks the size of my fist. And the ice along the pressure ridge was only 8" thick. The east side of the bay was good. Pretty rotten between the ramp and the docks, too. Jenny is in good shape though. 18" and solid.

Pac was still pretty solid this morning. A fellow I met on the ice did drop through the ice maybe 8
to 10' from the shore. Wasn't very deep and he goosed it back out. Started to get a bit soft on top as I left.

Yes it does! I finally got out and went bluegill fishing at Pactola. I think its time to get the boat out, by next week the shorelines will be open. Angostura is open anyway, so may as well go. I'm glad I got out one more time.

Well, jenny is good for a while. The ice was actually cracking today and it was solid top to bottom. Holes are still freezing. And the shavings are all snowcone and no cocktail ice.

The rainbows and browns have been really hitting in jenny. 8-10' down on pretty much any thing pretty much anywhere. The hardest thing is catching any under 14" so you can take more than one home.

So far all I have on my wish list for Fall are the Khatoolu Cleats that you posted a ways back. I am not sure that's how it's spelled. I like all my stuff so much, my SM 224 auger, FL-18, Nanook, Muck boots, Striker suit, I guess its time to go off the deep end and get some high dollar rod and reel combos.
