question about walleyes and spawning
« on: Mar 07, 2014, 02:38 PM »
I was just wondering if the walleye bite will slow down or pick up as they get closer to spawning?

Most important is season ends on March 15(next Saturday) and likely to have ice well past that on some walleye lakes.

Find out where they travel to spawn( flats or creeks) and look at a structure map around that area.   Good gravel bottom or nice drop offs with some cover is what I look for and fish.  And as for the bite.   It has picked up latley.  I think this thick late ice has put them off there patteren but if you found them there in years past at predawn then they are probally going to be there again this year

Correct me if i am wrong but dont walleye spawn when water temp is around 58 to 60 degrees. Do you think they are moving toward spawning areas already?

the number is closer to 41 degrees, but they make there ways to staging grounds before they actually make there run

With the thick ice and cold water temps I have found the eyes have moved into there staging areas and are feeding very well. On a couple bodies of water it's not uncommon to get double digit eyes in an evening right now.

They will be in actual spawn at 42-43 degrees. But their internal clock will start them moving in previous to this.
