Best cordless drill for Nils 6" auger?
« on: Feb 01, 2014, 09:17 AM »
I've broken 2 Milwaukee M18's. Same failure on both, auxiliary handle breaks, anchor tabs break off drill housing.
Looking at DeWalt, handle attachment is different. Milwaukee tech rep recommended 28V D handle angle drill.
Anyone else down this path?

I've been using a 18v li ion Hitachi hammer drill this season.  So far it's been bomb proof.  It's the one with 3ah batteries and the brushless motor.  Also, it has a lifetime tool warranty and 2-yr battery warranty.

They were on sale at Lowe's for $179.  The sale may have ended yesterday.

I have no experience with DeWalt or others, but would buy the Hitachi again.

Hope this helps.

Funny my Milwaukee drill has been great, battery life is suspect but keep them warm and they last.

Doesn't Home Depot carry their own RIGID brand down there?  Lifetime warranty on the batteries and the drill is pretty stout.

Milwaukee has addressed this problem and supplies the new drill to Vexilar.
I also posted the picture on the Milwaukee Facebook page which drew a immediate response.
I talked to the service coordinator (Joe ??) @ Milwaukee and he assured me I would be sent the latest model.
The unit arrived today and it was the same OLD model which will last 20 or 30 holes before failure again.
Beware Milwaukee Fuel.

I have been using the same drill on my 8" Nils convertible cordless auger.   No issues here at all.  The drill has more than enough sack to cut with the 8" auger.  Battery life has been fine even in the cold.  I believe in the manual it said the battery was designed to operate in sub freezing temps.    It's rips....... I used(borrowed) a 18v Makita on the auger to first test it.  Then bought the M18.  The Milwaukee had more power and battery life.  To bad you had bad luck with the handle because it's a horse of a drill with a great battery

My friend has one and uses it with a 18 volt millwakee and it works great but I'm thinking about getting a clam drill adapter and a good 24 volt dewalt drill and using it for first ice conditions

Have the nils 6", have been using the Porter Cable 20vMax 1/2 drill. For the price I paid, I cannot be happier. It came with 2 batterpacks (1.5ah), and they are releasing a 4 ah batter pack as an optional accessory this year. the two packs are super small and light, and more than enough each outing.

I'm drilling through over 24 inches of ice per hole.
