You'd also need to regear a transmission for it for torque and slow speed. Vertical shaft mower engines have very little of that, as it isn't needed to cut grass.

I think this will probably end badly, but I want to see it.

what size lawn mower? I have a better idea. Get a good snowblower and keep the ramps clean where I fish and I will drill your dang holes.

Why do you want to commit suicide?

Set your "lawnmower" outside and see if it starts when it gets down to 0.

Can be done, need to have gear reduction, would probably end up to heavy to be practical.

What if there was a way to leave the motor mounted where it was chop the handle down and still leave the lever to engage the blades on and attached.  Take the blades off and make like an attachment to go where the blades are that would go into the auger.  Then weld another handle the the opposite side of the other one.

What I said is easier to explain in a drawing then words lol

I have personally seen snow blowers on the ice used to clear paths and tow gear out for campaign fishing , so why not ?????????

Well dang, next spring how are you going to mow your lawn? Some places have a law that if your lawn is over 8" tall you could be fined or the city will mow it and charge you.

But seriously if you buy a hand auger you would be better off. The weight of the 5 HP would be more work then the hand auger. Hand augers could be had for $20 on most Craigslists.

I can see it come spring time, your grass is too tall and you have holes in your lawn, here's your sign !!!  ;D  ;D  ;D

first off you will want to add a fly wheel to it be fore you try starting cause they tend to kick back with out the mower blade[don't ask how I know]
go with a mini bike clutch and a chain drive [20 to 1 ratio]
long handles are a must
safety kill switches [cant have too many of them]
throttle don't need it,will go fast enuf at idle
get a person to record the ''test run'' so the accident investigation paper work is easier to complete [with disclaimers and ratings ] :roflmao:

I will die laughing when some guy pulls up on the ice on a rider mower and it starts drilling holes through the ice.
