older mod 30, no spark, is it magneto, or where to i start

go get a tune up kit, Plug points and condenser. Easy to put in. Like 13 bucks locally. Bet this cures your problem. If not all that is left is the coil. It is a little more pricey. I don't know the price as I have not replaced one in years. Probably the condenser wet the bed or points are dirty though.  Steve

This first and foremost.  Friend called me a few years back saying his auger wouldn't start on the lake.  Not even trying to fire, so I told him to pull the switch and bypass it and bingo it started for him.  Ran the rest of the day that way and we installed a new switch before his next trip out.

I have that i bought years ago and I took the recoil housen off and with fine sand paper clean the coil and magneto where you see the timingmarks, mine works perfectly ever since.
