Buffalo Union Ship Canal
« on: Jan 13, 2014, 10:17 AM »
I am hearing from people the perch, with a few Northern are being caught in the Union Ship Canal. Has anybody fished in there and how do you get down to the ice level from the wall?

Thanks,

just stay away from the back right corner as there is a drain pipe with constant water movement. not safe. I've tried it once last year but it was loaded with alewives, or some kind of shad. Fished it once before they cleaned it up and I did ok there. I also fish there in spring and fall for perch.
When hell freezes over, i'll be ice fishing there too!!

Were you fishing Saturday in that group by the new walking bridge ? I fished Friday night trying for Caicos and got half a dozen big rockies.

I heard about guys getting steelhead and walleye. Is that true or is it mainly perch being taken out of there?

Thanks Bigfish. I just checked it out today. Going to try it out on Wednesday. Looks like you go in on the opposite side of the drain pipe and stay towards the middle.

Anybody know what the ice thickness is by the walkway. I want to go this saturday morning. Think I'll have any trouble getting a sled down or should I just plan on buckets?
Hope to meet you Bigfish.

Half of WNY will now be there this weekend. These are small areas, not big lakes.

This place is just like SBH. In ten years of ice fishing these two places, you have one day on the ice that you can actually classify as "productive". Just like anywhere, right place, right time
