Monster Pike!!!
« on: Jan 06, 2014, 04:11 PM »
Went out for a few hours today, caught a few really small pike... was just getting ready to pack up when this monster came and bit down. Had an unreal time getting her out of the 8" hole but finally landed 'er.
44.5" long, 19" around the gut. will be weighing it soon on a bathroom scale
WOOOOOOOOT ;D ;D ;D

Awesome!  My friend your determination is really paying off for you. Well, done!
Hell, if I'd jumped on all the dames I'm supposed to have jumped on, I'd have had no time to go fishing.

Neither, tried dried meat twice with nothing more than tiny Jack tangling my line and haven't been to coal in years.  I go more towards  red Deer/bashaw ;) ;)

Truth be known... I was talking at length with a fish bio guy who was very good at explaining something i probably won't be as good at.. but basically... Pike that are 25" have already spawned 3-4 times.  and they produce more  and higher quality eggs than old ones...
the old ones are not as nearly as plentiful, so keeping the old ones makes so little difference in the stock count.
It's more about the numbers and quality of eggs than the massive size that kees the stock levels healthy.

just passing on the words that make sense.

Kyle, when you catch a 21 lb fish you may do whatever you want with it.  I fish to eat, not just for sport. The thought of just jamming hooks through fish faces for camera pics makes me sick. Ever hear of hook mortality? Regardless opinions are just that, and you're entitled to yours, but I'm with shackless... One old breeder from a lake isn't detrimental to the spawn.  Read a book

Well if you believe that I have some ocean front property in southern AB you might be interested in  ::). I am not alone in saying that the big females are the key to having a healthy population in a lake. It's in magazines, articles, tv shows, etc.

Here is a random article I just found on google if you don't believe me.

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2014/01/140102112241.htm?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+sciencedaily%2Fearth_climate%2Fecology+%28ScienceDaily%3A+Earth+%26+Climate+News+--+Ecology%29

I target big pike quite regularly and all my big fish go back down down the hole to spawn in the spring. If you fish to eat why would you want to keep a 15-20 year old fish that has the highest buildup of mercury/toxins in the lake? I know there is hook mortality, but there is lots of ways to minimize that.
One old breeder is not detrimental to anything, but if everybody in AB had that attitude....

Congrats on the beast of a pike! There sure are some real hogs swimming around in that lake, I haven't been lucky enough to tie into one yet, but it's nice to see someone finding them!
A bad day of fishing beats anything else I'd be doing today.....
