Greenbriar Ice Check
« on: Jan 04, 2014, 06:35 PM »
Stopped by Greenbriar State Park this morning.  Entire lake is ice covered, but only has two inches of black ice starting.  With the weather forecast I don't think we will be fishing here any time soon.  Darn.....

Haven't checked it since Saturday but gotta believe one can walk on water at Greenbriar tomorrow.  Don't know about this weekend though with the weather forecast.  Shame I have to work tomorrow.  Nothing like first ice crappie there...

Thanks for the info spur,  I need to get my Md license.  I just realized that last night when I pulled it out and it.  Prob will be going up there tomorrow for sure, if the wind will stop blowing.  Takes the fun out of it, ya know.

Hey Spur.   Glad to see you are still around.  Hope to see you on the hard water this year.    I printed out my 2014 license on the first anxiously awaiting first ice!

What species are found at Greenbriar?  I'm in Baltimore, would love to find some hardwater closer to home.  Any other tips would be appreciated.

Trout, bass, crappie, and sunfish.Went crappie fishing there last Sept. and caught about 30,but the biggest ones were only about 9".However the size of the crappie there changes from year to year. Some years they are up to 12".Probally be nice sized by the fall.Large bluegills in the lake.Best ice fishing bite for them just before and near dark.

Good luck assassin.  Be safe and post an ice condition report.  I may be able to fish Friday, late morning.

I plan to try out the ice tomorrow.  I got a tip-up for Christmas.  Never used one before.  Anyone know if they are regulated in MD?

The last time we ice fished Greenbriar the trout were hitting deep in front of the dam.   I am thinking I will target bluegill and crappie.  What part of the lake is good?

Hope to see some of you on the ice tomorrow!

Dan

Outstanding.    A great build-up of ice since Saturday,  Its a shame we have the warm weather coming in.   I'm definitely planning on late morning tomorrow..  Happy Days!

Fished a few hours this afternoon.  Thank you REB9 for the tips, and help. I know what I want for my birthday! (fishfinder)
The sunfish were stubborn and small, but still really fun to pull them up, and see them on the fishfinder.
Ice was good in front of the beech - about 5 inches.   I had no idea somebody went for a dip.  That is scary.
I might swing by in the morning.  By afternoon I think it will be mushy.

All the drainage ponds for parking lots in Frederick are all still locked up it was 26 this morning.  No clue if it's still safe but freezing nights the rest of the week.

I fished her Saturday until the monsoons drove me to drier climate.  Five inches of ice.  With 55 degrees today and sun, along with the rain, I'd say she isn't very safe.

Heading to Florida this weekend, so hoping for colder weather and safe ice in about 10 days
