Based on yesterday's satellite photos and the forecast for the next week I predict we will be able to get out on Lake Erie by next weekend.  With the frigid temps and no east winds it's going to make ice and it will stay at this end.

By February looks like a done deal. Next weekend who knows, I like to see ice from end to end before venturing out. Lots of open water west of the Catt. They're talking about another arctic blast last week of January. Lets hope it locks up.

Unless we get gale force winds to bust everything up I'm betting we have at least 10" of good ice off Sturgeon for as far as you can walk next Saturday.  Lord willing I will post a good report at that time.  You just watch how fast that big lake makes ice next week. By mid February you will be complaining how long it takes to drill thru.  Tip: then I look for re frozen cracks.

It looks like there's only been ice on the east end for 3 days judging by the satellite images, again I haven't been by the lake in a while so I could be wrong...high winds coming tomorrow hopefully it doesn't bust things up, a lot of the lake isn't locked yet...cross fingers for the weekend

We're gonna get out there. It's just a matter of time. There has been ice on the east end for a few weeks now but it has been unstable and not able to set up due to the high winds we keep getting. It will be one bumpy ride the first 1/4 mile that will get better the more the trail is used.

I'm planning to be at Sturgeon Point around 7AM and start walking out as soon as its light.  I don't want to drive my quad or go out in the dark for the first trip out.  I hope the forecasted 20-30 mph winds drop a bit by Saturday.  I won't finalize plans till later this week.

I am actually considering going, but I have to admit, a little scared. This weather looks like it should be pretty safe though. Can I get to the fishing grounds with my snowmobile or should I risk my friends quad when it is safe?  Then again, a mile walk out of Sturgeon is nothing.  Killed the perch there this fall.

A mile as the crow flies could easily turn into two miles when zig zagging around the shoves. I haven't seen it yet this year but in past years there can be shoves 20 feet high and by no means is it an easy walk. Once guys get a trail busted through it will get a little easier for the walkers.

Very cold the next few days with light winds, nothing crazy, should help build some ice. It's just a matter of how rough it is out there.
