Kind of "double-dipping" here as I already posted these pic's under the My $15 Sled thread... but since it went a bit (OK, a lot) over that budget, it's probably better served to be posted here anyway!  ;D

The "Smitty style" base is made from 2x8's for the legs and 2x4's for the cross members (all painted Petty Blue of course). The storage locker is mounted on 1" PVC frame. 1/2" PVC "goal posts" hold my Nils auger, and a pair of screw-in U-brackets hold the spud. The ski's cost me $10 at Deseret Industries (Utah's version of Salvation Army).

A modified "Blitz Box" (aka tough crate, milk crate) holds the jigging rods. This just hangs on a couple of hooks fastened to the locker. Lifts off easy and contains/protects my jigging rods at all times.

The mount for my Vex is a modified "carry over" from my original Jet Sled Jr. modification. The 1" PVC frame has two legs that slide easily into the 1 1/4" PVC uprights. That's my transducer cup in the lower right.

Broken down, packed away inside the Xterra. Probably could have shaved a bit off the back of the ski's so I could slide them straight in... might still do that.

Just thought I would show the last shanty I made a few years ago. Also have been reading about Smitty sleds so I threw one together this afternoon.

I made a light weight stadium seat

notice the transducer arm, comes apart so I can zipper up the case. Cat litter bucket is just right size to store the vex in.

friction fit joints hold the sled together

rigged up an offset handle for my lazer auger

will refine the smitty sled once season is over.

lj2tall - That is a bad ass set up you put together. The ingenuity and craftsmanship is outstanding.

It is so rewarding when you can come up with an idea and then put it into practical use.

My hats off to you. You should be very proud of your work.

lj2tall-That is a nice setup.  I'm jealous of how ingenios you were in figuring out the flip over. The only thing I would change is I would have used a snow camo pattern.

After reading this entire thread, many times over again, I decided to design my own.

Skis
2x4
1/4" luan for bottom front, back and sides
1/2" plywood for top
pine for internal bracing
All coated with two (2) layers West Systems 105 on the outside for strength and varnish on the inside for a preservative.

Love the bait jar holders. I use honey worms and the 1" gulp minnows almost exclusively. Great job.

Looking for some help - somewhere I saw a pic of someone's sled. They'd made an auger holder out of two buckets - one with slots the auger would fit in that nested inside the other. The auger rode horizontally on the bottom bucket, locked into place by the slots in the top one.

Any help with this?

I remember that rig.

Its possibly in one of the other "sled threads".   Dunno for sure though.

Nice sleds everybody!

I have been using this style of sled since 1985..

My first one had a square front and would plow on the taller drifts when being towed by a machine. It would throw snow all over my gear. Here are some pictures of my second version, featuring a boat nose.. stays on top of the drifts...

Here it is loaded up with gear for me and four first timers...

Works great on the go... leave the minnow on the hook and put it back in the open bucket, set the pole in the sled. I like having all that room in my sled...

That looks like one heavy sled.  But its built to last.  Isnt it amazing how much you bring out when you have first timers with you?

You must have a truck bed to transport it in to get to the lake

Thanks! Yep, always a truck, the first sled was built to fit the first style of Clams..

Fits a short bed S-10 or Ranger..

The new shanty is a 5600, same as the first ones, more or less...

Heavy? hmm..60lbs ish.... pulls like a dream though..

As a kid, we would walk out 3-4 miles sometimes we could hitch a ride in or out..

So the sled needed to be tough enough to pull fast, if you are a kid hitching a ride, you can't pick your speed lol!

I can sit on one side (over a ski) and ride on it as well, being towed...

One of the most critical aspects IMO is only attaching to the ski, where the bindings/boots should go. It lets the ski flex (won't break) and acts as a suspension i.e. leaf spring..

if someone still looking I used 2 buckets as auger holder on my glide lite. I don't have access to pictures but will try and find post that has them.

Built this sled a couple of weeks ago and got to take it for it's maiden voyage yesterday   Figured I'd snap a few pics while I had it out.

I have about 7 bucks invested in this sled.  Scrap wood, leftover paint, home made stencils, free skiis from a dumpster, and a 50 cent rack from a yard sale.  I did have to buy some screws and the eye bolts, hence the 7 bucks.  The sled is light, pulls very easy, and has room for everything I need for when I go without the flip-over.

Right on the money - that's exactly what it is.  Bought it for 50 cents at a yard sale!

Now they are made of plastic. They probably would not hold up.
