This a sled just to haul a couple of my traps

They are made out of mahogany, 10" in diameter to fit tight over the hole and have styrofoam insulation in them to keep the hole from freezing up. They work great. If the snow is blowing and drifting, the cover keeps the hole clean. I wish I could take the credit, but my neighbor made them. I traded labor with him to get the set.

Man those things are sweet!   Very inventive, I especially like the way the sled is a custom carrying case for them.
Are you SURE it's safe to walk on? Looks questionable to me!

  A REELY unique sled, no doubt
I must admit, the craftsmanship is very genuine, and that outfit has gotta be a one-of-a-kind. I don't think I'd want to pay the astronomical retail $$$ for a unit like that. But I'll bet your neighbor is now creating a newer/improved version of his first prototype (and I'm just guessing). yet truly understand I am beyond laziness when it comes to making my sled. I too own a clam 5600 and it currently serves as a sled alone (see other pics from previous IS members on this thread, just like me). Although in snow, it is a reel drag. For the last few years (and I did say years) I've been hymn'n & haw'n how to build a lightweight elevated unit to pull on the snow and or ice with relative ease. Well I do have some of the materials and the incomplete blueprint in my head, but have yet to put it together (maybe for some of us, soon enough we'll be using our walkers and wheelchairs to get out on the ice) so I'd better git crack'n about putting this thing together. And now to get reel creative in this technological crazed world, and the usefulness of glow-in-the-dark jigs. I wanna make a portable box (hopefully no bigger than a laptop) that is a battery operated unit, with a light inside, so we have glowies at the ready. Anybody got something like that??? Errrr, maybe I should've started another thread for this idea.

hey brent, looks good, can you move the auger a bit so the clam lays flat,,,between your stuff and mine,  we need a 4 wheeler or a few dogs ;D ;D
The more fish we release, is more fish we all can catch.  b/c we all like to catch.   Catch, Photo, Release!!  Such an easy concept, but so hard for others to understand!!!!!

Still waiting on ice here in the Detroit area, but I think we are getting close!

Just thought I would post this pic I took last night while setting up my new FishTrap Pro in the garage and waiting for the ice. It replaced my old faithful Trap who turned 15 this year.  You cant see but I have a led rope light across one of the bars. Havent trimmed the tystraps for the light yet as you can see. Vexilar and propane bottles are in the gray box on the left. I dont have much in the center hammock except my stove. Under the seat is a plastic tub that can hold fish, right now I have a few tipups in it. My cooler fits perfectly in the back, and a minnow bucket is next to it and my old faithful Coleman focus 5 heater is there too. My rods go along each side and are protected with golf club tubes. I have a mat in the tub that was leftover from a bed mat for my pickup. This weekend I am adding some old skis to the the tub. You can barely see on the floor on the right, I got rid of the tow rope and used some seat belt material instead. I do have a tow bar but thats not hooked up yet. The jury is out on the removable console. Its a nice idea, but Im not sure if it will end up being more trouble than its worth. Will have to try it a few times. This shack has never seen the ice yet.

Just trying to keep things organised in this trap. I didnt in my old one, I just threw everything in there and stuff always got mixed up.

just thought I would share

thanks

That's a really sweet setup Brian!  A place for everything, and everything in it's place, right?!   ;D
What kind of battery do you power your rope lights with?  I bet it looks pretty cool in there with the red lights for illumination.
Are you SURE it's safe to walk on? Looks questionable to me!

thanks. Everything is in its place now, not so sure after a day on the ice though LOL

The lights run off my vex battery. I am not sure how long it will last using both though. If the lights work out good I will probably buy a seperate battery for them. And they are white, not red. What you see in the pic is the power cord. You cant see the lights in the pic.

My jet sled is getting some holes in the bottom and  I was thinking of attaching a piece of linoleum on the bottom which i think will help with both pulling and durability. Does anyone see any drawbacks to using linoleum in this way? I figure i can use ALOT of rivets to attach it. Any ideas?

I think Linoleum will work, but may get brittle and crack/break once it hits that cold ice.  I think I would probably try contact cement as that stuff is really good for those kinds of surfaces.  I think rivets would have a tendency to dig into the ice making for a lot of resistance.
Another thing you might want to seriously consider is attaching skis.  I picked up a pair of downhill skis at a garage sale for $3 and mounted them to a 2x3 so the sled is up off the ice, and it pulls like a dream! (pics are somewhere back around page seven in this thread)

Be careful attaching skis to the Jet Sled. The shape of the outer runners may require you to make some type of adapter ( grooved 2x4, formed sheet metal, etc).

That's why I bought an Otter sled. You can mount a teflon runner kit (Hyfax) to prevent wear through.

I don't have a picture of mine but it is built of a frame of really thin steel (couldn't weld it) riveted together and covered with 1/4 puck board (AKA arena board, pvc) it sports a snowmobile hitch so I can tow it into our cabin, I made one trip to the cabin last year and it made it. it is 26"w x 84"L x 10"D

Wouldn't the linoleum get too brittle in the extreme cold?  I'd go for the hyfax.

I got tired of the red plastic toboggan I have used the last couple years. You would probably laugh if you saw pics. 2 buckets, one for tip-ups and poles, one for keeper fish/seat.
As soon as the poly dries and I do the final assembly. I'll post some pics of the woodworking I've been doing for the last week. Padded seat on top and plenty of space for all the gear I want, 2 full length x/country skis (cut skis sink in deep snow) and it pulls real easy, even in deep snow with a test load of 150 pounds in it. More gear than I'll ever pull with me. 24"x42" long wooden box design, ski's are detachable so it fits in the back of my escort wagon easily.

Here's my homemade sled for my suitcase shanty. I got tired of it being a snow plow instead of it riding on top of the snow. Now it is like pulling 5lbs behind me when I have probably 85lbs of gear on it. It puts together in 30 seconds and takes apart in 15 seconds. It glides so easy over the snow! Now I,m not afraid of walking a long distance to a hot spot if I have to. It can be built for $15-$20 depending how cheap you get your skis for and what other stuff you have on hand. My skis only cost me $5 at our local thrift store. This also comes apart really easy so you can fit in your car like I have to, NO TOOLS REQUIRED! I thought I should share this for anyone on a budget or for one to get into your car Like I have to. Smitty

OK here is what I have come up with in the off season
the pics were from my phone   sorry if they suck

this is the "sled" or mortar mixing bucket I bought from the home depot. $11.99

here are the UHMW runners I put on it EBay $19.00 for 10 pcs. I only used 4 of em so I have extras to replace them with I carefully laid it all out and everything is straight counterbored and even

well I like to be comfortable so I got a gamma seal lid $7.00 and attached a boat seat $35.00 to it I have found a short bucket to attach it to (hard to bend down....   something is in the way??? might have something to do with the BEER laughs the old lady while I am in full ice gear trying buckets in the livingroom)  the gamma seal ring stays on the bucket and I can remove the seat by spinning it on or off  and I have built in  waterproof storage for the electronics

and last I have a couple of kitty litter buckets freebie attached and a little shelf (freebie.... you laugh at me I am cutting up the cutting board) to hold my Joe and some bait and the such   the kitty litter buckets are just a hair larger than my fishing buckets so they don't get stuck together  (theres that damn BEER)

just enough room behind the buckets for the auger....      I think this just might work.

Should work fine, but for all of us it will be probably too small in time as we all accumulate more and more stuff to take with us icefishing. Good job! Smitty
