Deep Creek
« on: Dec 01, 2013, 06:32 PM »
Any thoughts on how early anyone thinks we'll get an ice pack there this year? 4inch at least.

The long range look pretty good if you want to trust it. If it's correct it looks like we could be before xmass

I spent last weekend at Pocomoke state park n there was ice on the pond inside the park and out near girdle tree. So I was thinking if the water out there is already cooling down then DCL has to be getting close. I have never been to DCL but ive heard tales of the ice fishing there and am really looking foreward to getting on some hard water this year. Its quite a drive from howard county but any day on the ice is worth it.

Just a lil sketch from last year....thought you guys might like it

If anyone goes....please give an update.    Some of us live multiple hours away and can not afford to make a iceless or dangerous trip. I don't really understand it because when I was out west there were folks on this site that were more than happy to give ice reports. But it seems here in the east people want to keep a lake with nearly 70 miles of shoreline a secret along with every other lake as well? Come on now!  But thanks to those who do share the info.

I"ve heard of a couple guys being out on 2".  Not safe enough for me.
Looking at the weekend forecast, we'll be back to square 1.

I  heard the same thing as JB 2-3 I niches with snow and slop on top.

And flyfish people will be secretive first ice but after that it's gets better. Many of the people I have met on the ice have been very nice and helpful.

Thanks guys....yeah that does not sound good....but at least its a good start...even if it does all melt hopefully the lake will remain cold enough to easily freeze later after Christmas.   Good luck to anyone who has the chance to get out there. Be safe.

Is there enough ice in any of the coves that might last the warm front? Maybe McHenry Cove? It's kind of looking like back to square one. Looks to be another cold front behind this heat wave.

McHenry was still mostly open, as of yesterday.

Hopefully the cold snap after this weekends warmup will make the coves freeze over nicely. Looking forward to a trip or two before back to real ice country in upstate NY.

@hesseltine' Oswego County (school is SUNY Oswego), given your ESF background I'd assume you know all about that stuff. I'm personally more of a steelheader/flyfish college kid, but I like to hit the Hard water for purposes of our fishing club (I founded last spring with a couple other guys, been president of it).

That's a great area for fishing.  So many good spots within and hour. I use to fish Oneida and sandy pond when I was in school a lot. Still make trips up to Oneida couple times a year.

McH cove is all open water as of noon today.  I expect new ice shortly in the shallow, low volume locations.  Only question is how much residual heat needs to bleed off H2O again / how windy or still at night / how soon next heat wave.  Hope that'll help.

There were people fishing before the rain and warm up in the usual early ice spots but it didn't last long.  I heard the whole lake capped on Christmas Eve but not sure if that is completely accurate or not.

The whole lake isn't totally froze yet. There isn't enough ice to fish just yet, middle next week after the cold front comes in maybe. I will see if anybody is out in McHenry cove tomorrow.

Checked several coves today and all had 1.5 inches of ice. I only drilled out about 30 ft from the shore and didn't see any peope out. The next cold front coming in on Monday should make parts fishable late next week.

Looking at the long term looks like mchenry, md is gonna stay below freezing for the next week, what are anyone's thoughts on when it would be a safe bet to go up there (3 hr drive)
