Be careful. I checked a lake today close to gull that took me 6 hard hits with the spud then moved 3 feet and broke through. Was only in hip deep water so no biggie but the ice is really uneven out there. I was able to break the ice back to where I hit with the spud then i couldn't break that ice and was able to lift myself out on it easy.

Yeah you can go maybe 30 feet from shore any further out than that and you are flirting with disaster. The ice that has been covered by the snow in the middle of the bay is not anywhere near safe yet. The first thing I am buying when I win the lotto on Tuesday is a Wilcraft.

Yesterday, 12/13, I walked out there where about 6 fisherman were seated. When I found out how much ice was underneath them...I was tiptoeing off...about 1-1.5 inches. With today's snow...must be treacherous. Meanwhile I also visited Wabascon and the guys there had about 2.5-3 inches straight out from the ramp almost to the island. They were not willing to try any further out or any other direction.

I'm going to be giving it some more time and weather.

What does the ice look like with all the snow? Can you get to the hump between the first and second bay?

First off,Proelite1,welcome to "the shanty". Due to work & family obligations,I have not been able to fish this week-end.But on my way home tonight,the wife & me drove by the bay to check it out.I could not believe that there was a pop-up, on 2nd. bay very near to that 60' of water

.3 more guys walking out that way,tight to the east side.A few others scattered around the south bay,but no one out in the middle of it.Could have headed out there,after dark,but I decided to pass,my wife told me to go ahead,if I wanted too,then she made some comment about my life insurance,being paid up

.The guys on 2nd. bay did NOT,get on from the salon.I may try it tommorrow night,but just for an hour or 2.BTW,the entire lake is still open,from the mouth of where the bay starts.

Ran into those guys coming in. They got approx. 150 smelt...yes I saw the evidence. Still too risky for me. I was checking my electronics with a new bottom charting chip. It was creepy out there. Ice is still thin and plenty of slush on top.

I noticed that all of gull lake is now froze over all but 50-60 yards out the north end is still open.

I guess its almost time for me to start checking out different spots on the lake,for ice conditions.Its quite apparent,south bay is not too safe right now.

As soon as the North end is tight, I will be a regular every Saturday nite. I only get one nite a week to get out. Hopefully I've paid my dues, and sacrificed enough bait that the smelt gods will smile kindly on me this year. Last year wasn't one to brag about. Still a great time.

Just drove by an hour ago... 3 shanties in the bay and another 3 in 2nd bay.... All 6are filled with some of the biggest balls around I'm guessing......
