Quapelle Lakes 2013-2014 Season
« on: Nov 11, 2013, 09:44 PM »
Ok guys and galls, the season is right around the corner! Any ideas on what the ice is like so far? My bet (as long as the weather stays like this) is second weekend in December! What are your thoughts?

Wonder why Katepwa always takes long to ice over than the other 3?  ??? Anyone been by Crooked or Round lately?

Katepwa takes longest because it's the deepest ad I believe it's also te fastest moving since it's the lowest lake

Forecast looks good, I don't think this snow is slowing down the ice from freezing. I'm thinking dec 1st

Crooked was still open this morning(sunday) but lots of slush being pushed in to shore.. and hundreds of geese still hanging around too. Do the geese contribute that much in preventing the lake from freezing over? why the heck they still here anyways?!?

As long as the geese can find some food to eat, even through the snow, and a place to go to drink and rest, they will stay.
Tough little guys. ;D

If there is a good flock then their combined body temps and constant moving in the water will keep pockets of the lake ice free for quite some time.
Those area will also be the thin spots to watch out for once they leave.

Really? Wow, I was hoping to go check it out this weekend. Did you happen to see how the other lakes were looking?

It was locked up but the warm weather and wind killed it, lots of geese still around unfortunately they are staying by the lakes vs feeding in the fields a few miles away we hunt. But with these colder temps and if the wind stays down we should have ice. I will be driving by echo/mission Saturday before I head north for moose and then back through on my way home next weekend or sooner if I tag out. Will report back how it's forming next time I'm through.

ya i drive by every day as i work in the fort and the warm weather and wind definately opened it up. mission has ice at the east end, not sure how thick but the rest of the lake is open any ways and so are the other lakes. as soon as i see them frozen i will post it. i was hoping for dec 1st to have a good 6-8 inches, this cold weather should freeze the lakes over in the next night or two.

When I drove by the lakes yeaterday they where still wide open, except for the east end mission. Was feeling brave so I walked out about 50-60 yrds wasnt able to drill so I didnt push it much farther. The ice felt ok but who really knows. Lets hope this cold snap put the freeze into motion. Think I'll try again after the weekend on days off seeing as hunting hasn't been that great either.

I wish that someone could give us a Heads Up on Pasqua.
I hear tell that the far West boat launch by LutherLand is decent at first ice.
We were thinking about giving it a whirl on Saturday.

Right after I get myself some Battery powered socks from Cabellas, that is.

Yes there was a portable shack on the ice at the hatchery on echo.they were out about 25 yards. I also talked to a guy fishing on pasqua and he was out about 30 yards from shore and he said it was about 6" thick but when he went out about 30 feet farther it was onlyabout three inches and yes I forgot to ask him how the fishing was. Tks gkomo

That was me and a buddy out at Echo, I drilled all the way out to 150 yards from shore. Ice was pretty uniform, 4.5 to 4.75 inches. Gave me a good chance to try out the new camera.

How did you like the new camera? :)
Did you see any fish strike your lure or any fish at all?
How was the fishing? ???

Yeah, don't leave the boys hangin now. The Hatchery seems to be a popular place to shore cast.

I usually park the boat approx 150' out. Was planning on giving the Hatchery a try too.
