what to use when you run out of waxworms.....
« on: Feb 20, 2013, 08:36 PM »
Out of waxworms and that seemed to be what they wanted. Tipped on an ice jiggie. Ive got spikes but i think they want the juicy waxworms....should i just put a couple spikes on and hope for the best? Nearest bait shop isnt worth the drive just for waxworms unfortunately. Ive got preserved meal worms too..maybe ill give those a whirl

Plastics work almost as good as waxworms.

Scrap live bait if it's a hassle to get/keep, gave up on it years ago. Plastics keep and can be presented so much better than fragile live baits

Plus plastics can catch multiple fish. Usually when I use waxworms they always fall off almost every fish.

Listen to what everyone is saying, I'm a plastic convert this season and couldn't be happier. I catch more fish on wedgies than I ever have with waxies. It was hard to believe my own eyes how differently the fish behave while watching my sonar between the two presentations. Quality is way up too, just wish I would have given them a better shot a long time ago.

I agree with the plastics but in a pinch a little piece of bacon can finish off a limit.

Gulp alive fish fry also works well in pink or white. As well as perch eyes in a pinch.

I'm convinced bait is a gimmick after this year. I've pulled out several limits of crappies on forage minnow spoons without bait this year and tonight did the same on gills. Hard to beat impulse mayflys for gills when you're out of bait too.

I agree, plastics. I switched to just plastics this year, and had way better success.

and scents

What sents?  Do you just use the liquid that the waxis come in?  Also, has anyone tried the Gulp Alive Minnow Head?

i love my waxxies but have a friend that uses nightcrawlers and does great, if not better, on crappies, 'gills and perch. i picked about 150 and put them in bedding last week when we had a light rain here in NY. i am going to be using them alot this year, cant afford many grubs cause i got the Striker Ice Hardwater suit. cost a bit but worth every penny!!!
boss spoons, they can catch it all!!!

Sell me on the Wax Worms, the fish I know prefer spikes.  I bought some at a Pet Store but they did not seem to work for me.

I usually start with plastic, and go to wax worms as a last resort. I ordered some colored preserved wax worms from Cabels just for sh##s and giggles. Spikes do work well and are a heck of a lot hardier if you're stuck on live bait.

see, a big mistake i see people make every time i go fishing is saying that one kind of bait or lure will work 100% of the time.

yes, plastics work. they often account for plenty of fish in my bucket.

yes, bait works, it often accounts for just as many fish in my bucket; whether it's waxworms, spikes, mealworms, or nightcrawlers.

but neither of them work 100% of the time. sometimes, i have to combine a bait with a plastic to get any fish at all.

the biggest reason i outfish pretty much everyone else on the lake is because i don't plan to fish one thing all day. i'll work and test, and check until i figure out what the fish want the most right then, then i'll fish it until they start to slow down, and i'll repeat the process.
people give me sideways looks whenever i say i had a 100 fish day, and it's all because i don't limit myself to one particular thing and hope that carries me through the day.

I try to do the same thing. Never really limit myself to one color or one type of jig. I combine plastics and bait alot too and it helps my overall catch!

Let's see....On any given outing I will usually bring the following:

a couple dozen waxies
up to 2 dozen dillies (smaller crawlers)
at least a dozen small/medium shiners, depending on the size fish I hope to catch.
tackle bag stocked with small and medium plastics of various colors, various sized spoons in various colors and shapes.

If I can't catch a fish it wouldn't be for lack of trying!

Probably the hardest thing any angler will do is change baits/lures when the action slows down.
We all have out favorite "go-to" lure or bait, and we've all had those times when we refused to change even after the bite has stopped.

I learned that change isn't always a bad thing.

One year, during a shortage of waxies, I discovered that a chunk of raw fresh peel and eat shrimp worked great...one or two will last all day, and are available at most super markets
