Fishing on sunny days
« on: Feb 17, 2013, 08:10 AM »
Going out tomorrow on my day off. A little bummed out it's supposed to be sunny all day. Can't remember a sunny day on the ice that I did extremely well. Always seem to do a lot better on cloudy days. How about you guys ? Any tips for fishing on sunny days ???

I agree.  I like overcast days too.  Get our early before the sun gets too high! We usually find the fish glued to the bottom in deeper water when its really bright out.  Downsizing to spikes on a tiny jig works well for us in these conditions too.

Never tried the downsizing thing. I have heard about it. I have read about it, but never actually tried it. I do have many size #12 and # 14 jigs in my arsenal, but never used them, maybe tomorrow I'll try It

Can't hurt....

I know that i have a lot of trouble seeing my vexilar in the sun.  Unless i am in a tent, it seems useless.  Anybody else have this problem?

I have been keeping a fishing journal for almost 4 years now, and looking back sunny days have been the best days for me.

I know I have better days when its overcast even when there is a snow cover on the ice. I think it may have to do more with the Barometric pressure then the rays of the sun. My buddy likes to clear away the snow from around his holes. He says it helps the fish that feed by sight find his offerings. I also know that this year it didn't make much difference what we tried. Nothing seemed to work.  I do leave my underwater camera at home when its bright sunshine out. Can't see anything on the screen unless you hover over it with a jacket covering you to make it dark enough to see. DC

I'll go with this one. I know it's going to be sunny tomorrow and at first I was bummed. Now I than looked back at my records and I realised that on cold mornings with a good westward wind, you know when your hands are freezing off, and the wind is ripping right through you, now there were some of our best mornings we've had.....

Now I'm pumped !!!!  Can't wait for the AM..........

I rarely catch crappie on sunny days, but have caught plenty of bluegills, perch, and bass. I rarely catch pike on overcast days. My best days ice fishing have been when it is raining.

I had a few good days when the sun was shining, but I would much rather have a cloudy day. The same goes for open water fishing.

Started fishing today at 6:20 am. Bite lasted for about an hour or so, and even at that it wasn't so good. In that first hour we caught 2 bass, 5 bluegills, and 4 or 5 skinny pickerel. Shortly after the sun came out, it was GAME OVER. Fished until 10:30 without another bite......

      I hate sunny days !!!!

I prefer cloudy days as a rule, the exception being late season. Hoping we have some ice for that this year. ::)

I would say I catch far less fish on crystal clear sunny days.
