I won't go out on the ice without them. I wear Arctic Armor too which gives me a little more security

Here is a video I took  of a fire dept doing an ice rescue.   I handed the guys my set of HT picks.   Now he  IS in a full suit and very buoyant, but you get the picture ;)

I wonder how many companies make ice picks?

I've only seen HT retractable ice picks and rapala retractable ice picks sold in one of my local stores, both sold for under $4.00 a set.

I've got a set of the retractable ones. They are on me until the ice is over 5 inches.

Something else you should do is make sure your ice picks will pull apart before you need them.  Depending on the type of pick you have, the two pieces may be rusted or froze together.  At the start of my trip I will pull the ice pick apart and just push it back together lightly.

Very good point and it has happened to me. I always check them from time to time to make sure they haven't rusted together.

I took 2 screw drivers and ground them down to about 1 1/2 inches. I put a point on em with a belt sander. I then drilled  holes in the top of the handles for string. I covered the points with some plastic tubing.
Arghh plundering other people's iceholes since 1981 aarrhhhhggg.
