My Grandfather taught me to wipe the cutting edge of my outdoor tools (axes, shovels, etc) with a light oil-covered rag in order to prevent rust between uses. Like WD40, this provides a microscopic barrier between the steel and the air and prevents oxidation. I just got a manual Nils 6" auger this season and want to baby it. I have been thawing it indoors between uses, then drying and wiping with a light coat of oil when fully dry. I am noticing some loss of paint on the auger head and wondering if this is caused by the oil or by routine use of the auger. Any thoughts?
