Hello, Looking for input before I tear into my machine. Its been a tough start to the season with me and my auger. First off is I bought it used last year, so I dont know how It been treated. When I got it it needed a carb cleaning. Noticed the throttle linkage was broken and wire was used to fix that. Last year I ran it dry to store it and fogged the cylinder. This year tried to start it with no luck. Found the gasket was dry and had no movement. Bought a gasket set and fixed that. Seems to be still letting too much gas by so Im going to have to adjust the spring and needle. I dont have the luxory of high and low mixture screws. So after I got it running good in the garage I took it out this weekend for its first true runs. Seemed to be a little weak in the torque area. I wasnt putting any weight to it and it would quit turning. Got almost to the point on my fifth hole to where it would barely turn as soon as it hit the ice. When I got home this is what I found:

I would say that someone has put too much grease in the gear housing or the seal is bad. I will bet that you got grease on the clutch and that is why the auger stops turning. Time to tear into it.

You will need to hold the flywheel and without a special spanner wrench that most used. you will have to tap the clutch in the direction of the arrow. Be careful not to damage the clutch drum.

Was the top seal bad or did someone pack the gears full of grease?

Got it off. Had to put a screw driver in the fly wheel and tap with a screw driver on the clutch. Now what is the best thing to clean grease out?

Plan on putting it back together tonight or this weekend. Got some Green grease from advanced auto rated to -20 last night. Sure get a funny look when you go into a parts store and ask for their coldest rating grease. Not sure what the problem was other than too much grease. All the componets inside look good. The only thing that might have caused it was I was having my carb leak before I got the gasket set and might have got some in the gears and made the grease not as thick. So far I have filled 2 grocery bags with greasy paper towels and q-tips with more to clean. I dont know If ill be able to test it under load because our ice is starting to fade quick and next week is supposed to be in the 60's.

Got it back together all nice and cleaned. Seams like it is working better but will need to test on the ice.
Before:

After cleaning:

Adding grease:

Clutch cleaned and assembled:

That grean grease is like working with stringy snot! It seams a little thick but auger turns fine once warmed up. Havent had any really cold temps to test it on yet.
Thanks for everyones help! I hope the pics help others!

How did you get the clutch drum off the top of the transmission?
