Sabattus Pike Fish for a Cure Derby results
« on: Jan 19, 2013, 04:34 PM »
Hey guys,
Driving home now from the derby. We had a great time! Met with Sinnian and _FLAG_ from the Maine site and met some other locals and had a really nice time. Our group (Big Jim, Coldsteel, JigChaser08 and Ashley, and myself) caught somewhere around 15-20 pike on the day with the biggest being Big Jim's 8lber. Winner of the derby was 16.06lbs.

Here are some pix.
Henry's 1st, snow was falling hard once the morning started.

My one and only today, thanks Henry!

Traffic jam leaving the lake

I didn't like seeing this, some guys left all of these on the ice...biggest over 30" :-(

Yeah all these dead pike make no sense to me. Its not like this pond is being managed for Salmon or something similiar. Its a place known for big pike, why kill the breeders for no reason and then just leave them there???? Every one of our fish was returned to the water today.

They love to pile fish up and leave them on the ice. Like the group from Maine last year bragging about killing 137 pike out of there. Class acts for sure. Oh wait they used them for lobster bait forgot. If u don't like pike then don't bother fishing for them.

A local store near Pushaw Lake up near Old Town offers 2$ per pike head.  They don't seem to be welcome up in them parts.

Good job Scott and crew....Look as though Erik is still holding the smallest fish of the bunch ;) Poor fella.

A side note fellas, I think it's safe to say , we all agree about the pike issue, however, lets not start a board war between the two ;)

Sense when has Sabbattus gone down hill ?? That place has remained one of the most consistent pike fisheries in Maine. If you spend any time there they are all the same size they need to be culled.

When has sabbattus been known for big pike there is so many rats in there that it needs to be culled. Remember Pike are invasive in Maine and almost all the rivers connect to some body of water that is managed for trout and salmon.

For quality fish yes. Have you seen the Bass, Perch that have come out of that pond now. Its not uncommon to catch a 2lb white or yellow perch. I have fished that pond religiously since 2007. If you liked catching 50 2lb pike then your right but it there is more 6-10lb fish in there now that a lot of the cookie cutters are getting culled. You should fish it open water right after ice out there is more big girls and boys in there now than there has been.

I am not one to throw fish on the ice I do believe that is disgusting and the fish should be taken home with them. Sabattus really needed population control the fish in there used to be skinny now they are got bellies on them.

Big whites have always been in there. Dead fish can't grow to big fish.

Nice job and thanks for sharing...it is too bad to see all those dead fish...not good
when chuck norris played golf for money, chuck marked down a hole in zero every time, the golf pro said, "chuck: you can't score zero on a hole." Chuck norris turned towards the man and said, "I'm chuck norris, the man proceeded to pour gas over his body and set himself on fire because that would be less painful than getting roundhouse kicked by chuck norris....chuck norris roundhouse kicked him in the face anyways

scott great pics. wish i coulda went. i knew a few people there. that pic of the traffic jam leaving the lake is sick. was anyone driving their trucks out there yet? where did everyone park at the boat ramp? i wouldn't worry about the pike kill. there are soooooo many in there in a crazy way it almost makes sense to cull some of them and i get it about the breeders. glad u had a nice trip.

Over on the Maine site there are some aerial photos of the derby.  Looks like there was a parking lot right on the shore...

Yup, no need of that.

But as far as catching and killing them~  to each their own.  They are classified as an invasive in Maine, and people are encouraged to kill them by IFW.  I've always put mine back, unless it was weighed in (12 lber for the first derby).  Our group of guys (about 30) kept them for lobster bait, so they would not be wasted, and picked up others off the ice that were left like in your picture.  We only got less than 2 doz because where we were fishing, we were fishing for size, not quantity (we placed 3rd).  There is a big fear of them spreading in Maine, and it is due to bucket bios.  A lot of people believe for everyone killed, that is one less fish that can be transported somewhere else.

We fished for the "cause", none of us fish for them otherwise.  It was a great time had by all, for an even better cause!  The organizers make sure none of those fish are left to waste.  Some will be brought to soup kitchens and the others given to lobstermen.  They'll be going around today to pick up those piles, but it is a shame people can not be more responsible for themselves.
