Maine Lake depth maps???
« on: Jan 19, 2013, 07:11 AM »
I have some smaller lakes that I am interested in looking over. Is there any newer sites that offer detailed depths of not so popular lakes?  I see there are several that offer the big lakes on Maine but almost none in Washington County. :-\ Thanks

Did you try looking through the spiral bound state-wide Delorme fishing depth guide?  Quite comprehensive.  If you list the bodies of water, I can look through mine and let you know if they're on there if you'd like.  Or, just go buy one if you don't own one, since they're incredibly handy guides.  Other than the state's free site online, I don't know of any others on the web.

Don't know if these guys have the lakes you're looking for, but they have alot more detail than the Delorme,  http://www.fishinghotspots.com/

On the DIFW web site there are the survey maps of most of the state lakes and ponds. Most are older but will give you a good idea of what the pond is like.

When I went to the site on the link provided by Weskeagclouser, I counted 135 lakes with maps for Washington County, so there's a great chance that many of the lakes/ponds you want are on that site.

That link has unnamed ponds which are 5acres, 7acres . The ponds you want to fish if they are not listed they are closed to icefishing, Am I right in assuming This ?

there is a APP on the IF&W website you can download and it loads into google earth program (you'll have to download that from google) on your computer which loads all boat launches and depths of Maine lakes and ponds.  its pretty slick..

There are some small ponds around here that I have not found and they are big enough to fish legally.

Sounds like it's time to get out some drawing paper and a sounding lead!!  Add to the state info!

But they shared their info with YOU!!  LOL.  Seriously, though, I doubt I'd share either.

Where is the link for this? Having trouble finding it but sounds pretty cool and I'd love to try it!

Ok, I will let the cat out of the bag. I am looking for a perch hole on First Chain Lake north of rt 9. Any ideas?

Look on the list for "Chain Lake (First)", Doug. I think that's what you want.

I wish the Department would always list things the way anglers say the lake name, as in First Chain Lake, rather than Chain Lake, First. It makes it hard for people to find what they are looking for, especially in the lawbook. I have made that suggestion to them numerous times, but without success.

I looked at one of the old depth maps and got some soundings but I was hoping there may be a topo map available.

Although that 35ft deep hole on the southern end is good Ive done better in that consistent 30ft area just north of there. Just my 2 cents. Good Luck

I came across this while googleling. I know it's old so I apologize for re-surfacing this, but this might help others out..

http://www.youhuntandfish.com/fishing/fishingspots/103-first-chain-lake-wesley-maine

In complete disclosure this is my site. If you click the little checkbox on the bottom left corner of the map it will show the depths recorded by USGS. I've basically scrapped all this data for Maine so I can show it on the maps.

Hope that helps!

Correct, they were made by early biologists operating without the ease of GPS to get their position accurately located on the map they were trying to create. Also, they were using a long brass chain with a heavy lead weight for determining depth, so it took a lot more time to measure and record depths than it would with today's sonar. But, with what they had to work with, they got us some beginnings of Maine Lake depth maps. The purpose of the original maps was to determine the volume of the lake that might be used as habitat by/for salmon and trout species, to help fishery management and stocking decisions to be made.
