Need Help Jiffy Ice auger 3hp
« on: Dec 31, 2012, 11:18 AM »
Hey guys I have this 3 hp Jiffy Model 34-ST with a 3hp tecumseh carb in it.  I bought this thing used last year and really didn't use it at all because there wasn't much ice here in CT last year.  It never seemed to run correctly since I got it.  It would bog down when you put a load on it and would idle okay but eventually die if you left it idling for over say 30seconds.  I tried adjusting it and nothing seemed to work.  The main problem is bogging under a load.  I have since purchased a new carb for it and I still have the same problem.  I have started with the base adjustment which is 1/4 turn low speed but it won't run unless its 1 1/4 turn out.  The high speed I cannot dial in it just bogs down horribly no matter what its at.  Any ideas what going on?
Dan

Sounds like too much fuel.  Is there a petcock that could be switched out? Assuming You have the fuel tank cap with an adjustable screw on it, maybe it's getting too much or not enough air?  Spark plug change?  Play with the choke (last year, my new 2011 wants half choke or it will die when throttle is pressed).

The obvious answer- take it to a small engine or jiffy authorized repair shop.

Had problems with my old jiffy model 30 start ok ran ok for a little while then die. Cleaned the carb and replaced the diaphram on the carb, runs great now. I was able to buy just the diaphram and gasket at L&M farm supply store for $4.49 the Tecumseh part number was 630978. The carb diaphram is a good place to start, they don't last forever.

This is the carb adjustment procedure from the Tecumseh Technicians handbook. It slightly differs from the above post way to adjust, But I agree it must be done with the engine cold for the final tweak. What I didn't quite understand was do you adjust the high speed screw while running wide open to get the most rpm or do you just adjust it for a smooth transition from idle to high speed? in the above post? The other thing is when you are adjusting the low speed you also might have to keep backing off the idle stop screw as you adjust the low speed screw if the idle keeps going higher it will start to engage the clutch. I am going to record my screw settings and try adjusting it both ways and see which is better.

DIAPHRAGM - SINGLE AND DUAL ADJUSTMENT
Turn the mixture adjustment screw(s) clockwise finger
tight, then one (1) turn counterclockwise. This setting
will allow the engine to be started so that the carburetor
can be fine tuned. Do not adjust the carburetor when
the engine is cold.
Start the engine and let it warm-up for approximately
5 minutes. If the engine falters or stops after the choke
lever is moved to the "OFF" position, turn the adjusting
screw 1/4 turn counterclockwise and restart the engine.
NOTE: On dual adjust, the first adjustment must be
made with the main mixture screw.
With the engine running, turn the mixture adjustment
screw clockwise until the engine starts to falter,
remember this location. Next turn the screw
counterclockwise until the engine starts to sputter or
drop in R.P.M., remember this location. Now turn the
screw clockwise until it is halfway between these two
locations. This will be the optimum carburetor setting.
With dual adjust carburetor, repeat the above steps
for the second (idle) mixture adjusting screw.

Obviously you guys are not going to the website I attached because its the actual service manual for the 3 hp Tecumseh which goes into detail about the adjustment of the carb as well as the governor.

Why do you say that?  The adjustment procedure I posted above is directly out of that pdf manual.

ok guys Im bringing this to the top.  I really have no idea whats wrong with this thing.  I did a compression test and it was around 115 which sounds pretty good to me.  It still doesn't run good under a load.  I would think a bad ring or gasket would show low compression.  Any ideas?

The problem I had because of a to rich of  oil mix the muffler had to
be dismantled to clean the carbon that was clogging the screen
causing back pressure to the engines exhaust

I never thought about that but it can't hurt to clean it out.
