My brother in law made his triggers out of jumbo paper clips, they work!

Bquick, thanks for the inspiration on the design.  I have added a couple features to the one that I just built tonight.  I did add the extra loop so it doesn't tear up the rod as previously mentioned.  Also I didn't know what would be the right length with various rods so I made it adjustable by putting a bunch of staples in at  different lengths to clip to.

I've also uploaded a couple videos to show the trigger mechanism going off.

Let me know what you guys think.  This is the second version I have built and never tested any on the ice yet.

Your variable tension system is pretty ingenious!  Great work.

Thanks.  I think they are a little closer than they needed to be and don't quite have as much travel as I wanted. The pole used is a 24" light action" as that is all I have now.  Figured it would make sense to have enough travel to go up to a 5' pole if possible.  I guess I put another staple or eyelet on the back by the rod holder to loop the trigger through for short poles and not run through on long poles.  This would give me and extra 24" of travel roughly.  I'll try it tonight and take some pictures if it works.

If you look at the one I made and picture this. I plan to make a new one today that has more board with a hinge in the middle of it so it folds under. I will then just drill a new hole for different sized rods on the board.

|-----------------------------------------|----------------------------------|  End of board
|-----------------------------------------|----------------------------------|
Rod Holder                              Hinge  Drill holes along here

I will only make it long enough for up to 48" Rods.
I will still use the Eye Bolt for my Trigger to attach to.

Lefty, I like the idea but then it gets pretty big and it would be hard to put outriggers/stabilizers on it.

I have found metal clothes hanger wire to be very good for trigger and other tasks. Just the right stiffness to hold shape but easy enough to make it into the shape you want.  Best of all, it's free because I have a closet full of them that I don't use!

I might not make the hinged one for longer rods. But I do have one almost done now that will use a 30" Rod and have the same adjustments on it like the Jaw Jacker for tension. It may use 27"-30" Rods. I will most likely use the same Trigger I last made.
If I wanted a longer rod I would just cut another piece of 1x4 and then hinge it to the end of the ones I am making. TO go from the 30" Rod to say a 36" Rod you would only need about 4" more of wood because of the bend of the rods. Still thinking this out, want this one to be my last design.
SO the trigger will always be the same size but the rod will adjust in tension. The heavier tension setting for a 27" rod will work for a 30" rod. I should have one done tonight after I go into town for more parts.

Here is my new Rod Hook Setter. Uses 25"-32" Rods and can have up to 4 Tension settings.
27" Rod

30" Rod

The extra settings comes from the other 2 holes on the rod holder. One in Front and One in back of the holder. The one in front lifts the rod holder. The one in back moves the rod holder back.

Is there a chance the washer could wrap around the line as it sets or reeling fish?

Michianafisherman, I don't believe it can really get caught in there.  I was worried about that at first but after messing with it a bunch of times in the basement, it seems to always just danggel and not get caught.  I haven't used it on the ice yet and wk t be able to for a while with this weather coming in.

Hey Guys. With these rigs, do they count as tip ups?   I'm assuming they do but they use a jiggin pole......

If you put a flag on the tip of the rod they would! Without it, in most states they would just be a rod holder holding your rod and setting the hook for you. Needs to be some type of signal flag showing a fish bite.

I'm making a couple of these for next year!

Hey guys, Built one last night and figured out a solution to the eye-damage conundrum. I put a keyring/split-ring splitting and holding both of the 45 degree rod-tip-eye-supports. This means that it will not wobble when using rod for active jigging, but will be available when in hook-set rig. Also, can be spun to completely encircle supports so it is not lost in transportation. One rod, many applications :-)

Hey guys, had my units out yesterday and we didn't have a lot of action where I was but most of the action  was on these.   Between me and a few friends out on the ice we had 20 tip ups out and 2 of these units.  90% of the fish came from those 2 units.  Easy to set up, 80-90% hook ups.  Worked on 8" to 17" pickerel and a small crappie.  Very happy with them.   If I can get some new poles I'll be building more.

i like seeing ingenuity. looks like some thing to try out too. nice one!

why not use Vinyl-Coated Paper Clips to save guides?

just built a trigger using one.

looking to attach the trap wire to a bucket style rod holder with home made leader black vinyl coated.
