My Ice Fishing Sled
« on: Mar 13, 2012, 09:44 PM »
Hello from Salmon Arm, BC, Canada
I've never ice fished before until this year. Really can not believe how relaxing it is to stare at a hole in the ice for hours on end. Too cool. I researched ice fishing alot before getting out there and with my job of a transit driver, had lots of time to think up the idea for my sled. I saw many variations on Iceshanty and decided to build this one. The sled is from Sears. I converted my Petro-points to my Sears card so the sled did not cost me anything. I used 3\4" thick wall pvc and fittings, screwed together, not glued so I can change things if needed. The bottom of the black box is level with the top of the sled to leave full length storage under it and the lid makes a great table. Inside is the Mr Heater Buddy for the pop-up, tackle box, bait boxes, extra gloves, camera, ice cleats for walking, extra plastic ice scoop as well as other stuff. Very handy. I got all the stickers from the stock-car track in Vernon BC, where I have driven the tow-truck for the past 5+ years, and finally found a place to use them.

8" Auger, shovel,  2 easy accessed ski poles for walking aids and emergency rope

Rod holder, I have 3 rods for when others come with me, fish gaff, and extendable ice scoop. Sled is lifted 4 inches off skis.

Go Canucks Go

2 pics of my one man pop up shelter for bad weather or very cold days. Only 3" high when folded down, lays ontop of sled rack for transport.

I picked up an Eagle Cuda 128 fish finder from a guy for $45. I found that the 8 AA batteries did not last long in the cold so I took the rechargable battery from my Huminbird 160 portable fish finder and put it in this lunch box with thick foam for warmth. A disposable hand warmer can be put in as well on extremely cold days. I cut the Eagle finder head mount off of it's origional case and mounted it on the box. The screen head comes off and stores inside the box as well when not in use.
The transducer is mounted on 3\4" and 1\2" thin walled pvc. This set up is adjustable for thicker ice as well.

A great little rod holder that sits about level with my chair in easy reach for jigging or to bring in the big one. (NOTE: am still waiting for the big one, lol.) The upright part detaches and stores flat on the base.

Cool sled, great work, like the aluminum brackets for the ski/sled connection. good idea to use screw on the PVC in case or for when you decide to make mods to the upper part.  Seems like most sleds are a work in progress quite often. Les

The sled is attached to 1/4" x 3" wide aluminum plate that was bent to a 2" rise. This was mounted to the skis origionally but later decided to put the aluminum 2x3 box risers for more clearance.

Nice sled!  Not sure if it's intended for ice fishing, or going around the lake at 200 mph with all those sponsor decals on there!!   ;)
