Number 6 or 8's. I like eagle claws but I heard that octopuses are pretty good as well
Some people say that if you've caught one fish you've caught them all. I say that if you've caught one fish, you want to catch them all!

some people only use red. I personally have luck on both. Today I got all my action on red but other days its opposite or doesn't seem to make a difference.

red makes them dead

Never use red hooks if you want to release them, if they swallow it, they are goners. Use only the traditional hooks if you care about the fishery. i personally use eagle claw 6's. tried red and regular, seen NO difference.

How do you know they are goners? Do you follow the fish down the hole?  What proof do you have to back this up?

That isn't always the case. I did some research and there are plenty of biodegradable red hooks on the market. So if you care about the fishery look into what you are buying.

How do you know they are goners? Do you follow the fish down the hole?  What proof do you have to back this up?

It's pretty simple really, first you have to look at what red hooks are made out of, compared to a traditional hook. We all know that Regular hooks rust, that is, if you have ever gotten some moisture in your tackle box and not aired it out. the reddish brown on your hooks and lures is RUST, which is the oxidation of the metal. essentially this is the rotting of the hook. This happens when a traditional hook, is in the fish's gut or mouth. The hook will rust out of the fish. (I dont tend to think it is as quick as they say it is).  But when we look at red hooks, we are dealing with a different material than traditional hooks. Red hooks, at least all the ones i know of, are made of stainless steel, which doesnt rust well. So its not that red hooks are bad, its that stainless steel is bad. If you can find red hooks that rust out better, go for it. There are studies to point out that bronzed "traditional" hooks rust much better than stainless does.

As for the goners comment, perhaps i was a little rash. But when a fish is guthooked, it often impedes, or completely stops the fishes ability to feed.  If the hook is not rusted out or freed, the fish may die of starvation.  I'm not saying that a bronzed hook will not kill a fish, but I am saying that fish have a much better shot at living with a bronzed hook.

Why does a hook have to be stainless to make it red?

red #6 octopus hooks.  I used to just use plain old bronz eagle claws for years, I switched over last year and I don't really see a differance in them.

I like Gamakatsu Octopus hooks in size 8, 10 and 6 depending on the size of the brook trout.  Lots of 18 to 22 inch brook trout where I live.  The ones I preferred are no longer available, they had a barb on the shank to hold the bait.  I've also got some great VMC eyeless hooks from Europe that are fantastic.
