pic of your decoys and/or attactors
« on: Jan 17, 2012, 01:55 PM »
We have pics of your spear and your catch, lets get a good spot for people to look at what kind of decoys are out there. I like to see the simple and complex works of art that are used in the houses. I also that to see all kinds of idea to bring in the big ones. The more info we can get out there the better it is for all of us. This site got me hooked on spearing and carving decoys, so lets try to get us all fired up with your pics.
Here is a few decoys I have and us and some I'm working on.

My 4 year old Daughter helped make this decoy, and she painted it too.

this decoy I got from my Grandpa It's around 100 years old from the Saginaw bay market days. I have one of the old fines put away. Grandpa put these fines on it 40 years ago, after one was losed.

My first: (still hadn't removed the tape from the copper fins)

My second:

The last deke I made:

I've got others in the works, but I'm going to have to switch woods.  I made the others out of basswood, but it swells and cracks.  I was real mad when I realized the pike, which took me about 10 hours to make, got cracked paint after the first swim.  Going to switch to cedar which I hear doesn't act like basswood.

Man that sucks I was really hoping that I was wrong about the bass wood cause it so much nicer to work with than cedar which is much more dense. Sorry to here about that pretty pike  :-\

I use white cedar and vinyl paint from coating systems. If you thin it you can airbrush it on. I was using a lacquer top coat ,but I just got a vinyl clear and I'm going to try that out. The vinyl is flexable and chip and crack resistant. The big plus is it dries in 10-15 minutes and no heat setting between colors. Painted this perch, with many colors over the others, as I hold it by hand, now it just needs a clear coat.

I liked this from another post by JCrean, so I thought I would share it here too.

Most of the time I use a big, live chub, regardless of ice, snow, or water clarity.  I've had great luck.

I do use a spoon inline, with hooks removed to weight my minnow.  Provides extra flash.

1230112306a by jasonmichalski, on Flickr

I also like to jig a firetiger spoon tipped with a big minnow.  I use this to rustle up some fun when things are slow, or mess with short fish when they are in the hole.

For fakes, red and white is tough to beat.  If my live chub isn't working, I'll raise it up and swim the fake.  A lot of time I'll swim both, with the fake being the low deke, and the live minnow being the higher one.

You should let us know when you find out if the spinner on the pike decoy helps or not. If looks like a winner. @)

I always forget about my spinner a made when I first started spearing. I will have to take some pictures of that soon and pst them, because they do work I had a pike eat a red and white golf ball this weekend, and I've speared pike and watched walleye come in to a spinning firetiger spoon. I have six more decoys ready for paint and I post those soon too, for now here is one of the decoys I just put clear on before the clear.

folk art style sunfish painted last night needs to get clear tonight. It wasn't suppost to be folk art style, but the air brush lost a set screw and I had to fix some paint splater.

It helps me relax at night because of my narcolepsy I have trouble sleeping when I should be, I'd have more done, but we still have good ice as of last weekend there was more then the weekend before. You should let me know if you make it back this way, I'm only 4 miles from the Roscommon County line. My Dad lives on the Saginaw Bay next year if it freezes I might try out there, we use too see some monster pike under the ice.

What kind of motion does that S shape make in the water?  Looks pretty good.  What are your fins made of also?

Anytime Higgins just that me know. The meds help stop the nods, and they improve focus, Maybe that has something to do with the detail I put in the decoys.

The tail is out to the side more then the rest of the body a little, but the swim direction could have been left or right. When I tuned it I adjusted the fins and eye to make it follow the tail. It was a little harder to tune , but I have found I'm getting very good at making the decoys do what I want. The red and white shiner I said before had a 2' circle, but in the cold water it has about 6' circle and slowly sinks. The sunfish has about the same circle and is smooth and even slower, and it sank straight down intill I bent the fins. The fins on all my decoys are copper if not painted and left over heating duct sheet metal, from when I built my house, if painted. I don't see the point of wasting copper with paint. The perch is the same sheet metal, but with a lot of detail grinding. I like the flexibility of the sheet medal, but my poor cut up fingers hate it, if you use it be careful it hurts like the  >:D.

Clear is done on the pike. The pike has a thin layer on Pearl paint over the other colors so the flash is making the sparkles look like weird spots on the decoy. :)

Finished an acrylic decoy today.  The pike absolutely love my Marvin Johnson acrylic decoy, so I made my own.

The best part about this stuff is it requires no supplemental weight, won't swell and crack, and you can run it over with a truck.

I used copper for the tail and fins.  I also put a buckshot rattle in the decoy.  Total length is about 9.5".

Can't wait to break it in!

The hillbilly  spinner it has a speed control on top and I hook it to a 6volt, and I screw the end of the wood to the ice.
Sorry the pic is dark the flash reflected off the reflector I stuck it in the shanty strap to get a good pic. The lure on it is a fire tiger spoon and a lead weight I painted

Last deke of the year.

Acrylic that rattles.

Modeled the body after a shiner of about 7".

Hunter green and white basecoat.

We'll see if it produces this weekend in the U.P.!

Nice work JCrean. Do those have a slow fall or fast drop, I'm wondering because you said you don't have to add weight. If the specific gravity is close to 1 it should be slow, but one would think it would be higher, but not near stone, which is between 6-7.  ???
