Schroon lake
« on: Jan 15, 2012, 08:06 PM »
How's Schroon doing?  I've been invited up to Schroon to fish, and was wondering how it was doing.  Does it have any ice?  I'm about 2 1/2 hours south and would like to know if it is worth the trip

Thanks

Yes, smelt are allowed on Schroon, but I don't think anyone sells them now.

you can use them for bait but can not take them off the ice.

Actually, you can't bring them back to Schroon or to another lake to use as bait; but you can bring them home to eat. ;)

4 wheelers?  Only if you enjoy fishing them out of the drink.   Worst, most irregular ice conditions I have seen on this lake, and I've been fishing Schroon since the early eighties.

Should be good in Keplers bay,  just stay away from inlet.  Don't assume anything this year, always check.  Ice conditions vary greatly so far.  If we had a week of the kind of weather we had this weekend, 17below,  things would even out, but that's not what is forecasted.

I was on the north end yesterday. Good ice there.  I don't think it is good below there though.

Last couple days a guy was fishing out in front of the boat launch behind Stewarts,  today a group was fishing the narrows.   South end is now frozen,  but probably not safe yet.   Might go drill some test holes tomorrow.

Thanks for the update. Excuse my ignorance but I`m new to this lake. By `narrows` which is often referred to here do you mean the narrow part in the center of the lake? Sorry, I`m a little confused `cause I heard guys talking about `narrows` somewhere at the south end.

Thanks for confirming! I guess to reach the narrows one should head south from access point off Fowler?

This year I would like to try for Lakers. I've been pike fishing for a few years so I have zero experience with lakers. I know only that you need flourocarbon light test. Can anyone help out with the basics including bait type and size? ???

cant go wrong with suckers between 6" to 8" and if you can jig up some smelt while you are there better yet.  if you have a fish finder find what depth the smelt are traveling at set just above them ,alon with setting deep i also set a couple just under the ice about 3' down i know most will say its a salmon set but i have gotten just as many lake trout doing this because the smelt travel just under the ice alot of the time ,plus you may score on some salmon as well. good luck

Lake George may not be a bad bet if you're just looking to get the species under your belt and get discouraged at Schroon. That is, if we get safe ice. The laker dudes I hang with do well  jigging anything big and white. Pimples, tube jigs, crippled herring, etc...
Here's a link to our trout boards if you care to take a gander. http://www.iceshanty.com/ice_fishing/index.php?board=42.0
There are a few good laker threads that should help.
Good luck in your mission
