This years bait trapping thread
« on: Dec 11, 2011, 08:04 AM »
Haven't seen much about bait trappin this season...who's in? I have about 15 dozen. I am keeping them in my basement entryway this year. I have two 30 gallon jugs that they live in for now. I have changed out their water once in 2 weeks and all seems well. Last year I had about 400 fish. When everything froze hard I lost about 125 bait fish. Not this year. So, who else is trying something new?
I fish.

I usually wait till my bait pond is frozen over.  And why trap so early?  It only takes one night to trap enough bait for the season.

I don't have a spot that yields as much, so it is usaully a dozen here, a dozen there, but I had a good week and got my starters. Last year I was icefishing by about the 16th of Dec. :)

My bait pond is screwed...

I havent got a shiner or dace since Jan 2009, just hornpout.  Dunno what happened, the pond was a bottomless pit of redfins, regular shiners, fatheads and dace. It just shut off entirely at any depth/position.

I have been at it since sept,I have lost 3 fish total and one was stuck to the pump,I have around 300 goldens and 400 emeralds.I will be done soon.I have had to bust open a trough with my gaff to set out again.I keep my filter clean and use finer shiner in my 100 gal set up in my garage.

I use two 55 gal drums with pond pumps putting water through a 5 gal pail full of sand, bio balls and polly fill which in turn waterfalls down in my tanks. My garage is insulated but I keep the heat off.

I'd reaLlly like to get into trapping bait, but I have no idea where to start.  I've never done it and I don't even know anyone that does.  Anyone in the Richmond area want to show someone the ropes I'd be all ears!

What do you use for a filter and what do you feed them?  Do you leave them in an unheated space?

I use a 64 qt cooler with an airator. I add a pinch of rock salt and change the water once a week. Had bait all winter.

I've used this setup for a few years. Usually works pretty good but I ended up having to change the water out every couple days. I got tired of that so I bought a 50 gal storage tote with an aquarium filter for this years setup. should work pretty well.

Smart Man pikeslammer. I had the same set-up last year minus the box...frozen pump hoses=no filtration or aeration= 1 giant 55 gallon dead fish popsicle. :( :-[
