Berkley Vanish Fluorocarbon Knots
« on: Oct 24, 2011, 12:04 PM »
I bought some new line this weekend for my reels. Berkley Micro Ice 3 lb solar for my panfish rods and 6 lb clear steel for walleyes. I also bought some 4 lb Vanish for my leaders. I usually use improved clinch knots to attach everything. Berkley recommends a trilene knot. Just wondering if I am ok if I use the improved clinch with the Vanish?

not sure about the 3 - 6 lb line, but with berkley vanish 12 lb (for summer bass fishing) the ONLY knot that wouldn't break on me is a "double-uni" knot.  trilene knot was decent, but still broke off too many times for me...  I almost gave up on fluoro line completely till i tried the double uni...

yep me too.  I still think the vanish is an inferior flouro - but after switching to a double uni I had no more line-connection knot failures.  What do you use to attached flouro to terminal tackle (i.e. lure/snap-swivel)?  I've been using a palomar, but it's not great  :-\
I think there are probably better flouro's out there....

Of all the different Fluorocarbon lines, P-line, Berkley, Trilene and Seaguar, the Duncan Loop or Uni knot has not let me down yet ! Flouro to Flouro, Flouro to braid, Flouro to Swivels and Flouro to Hooks, 2lb or 80 lb, it is what works for me ! Good luck !

FWIW, i had horrible knot strength problems with Vanish - both at the fluoro to braid connection and the fluoro to lure connection.  I dropped it completely about 4 years ago.  I have had very good luck on the ice with Berkely Micro Ice line.

Florocabon always slips for me when using the trilene knot.  For Mono I will not use anything else.  I like to use a palomar when possible. Improved cinch otherwise.

Palomar knot works fine,  Trilene knot has not worked for me.  I also noticed that I can't tie a dropper loop w/ Floro w/out it slipping

When I first tried fluorocarbaon lines years ago, I had weak knot probems and slipping.  I had to re-learn how to tie my knots, well actually how to snug the knot.  Since after that, I've had very little problems.  However keep in mind that flourocarbon lines tend to have weaker knot strengths compared to your other nylon fishing lines.

On all my Fluoro bass rigs, I tie a "double san diego jammer" knot. Sounds funkie; but it is a 100% knot. Google it to see how to tie it.

Yes... "jammer" knot will work on all lines.  I forgot to mention (I am sure all probably already know this) that it is very important to lube the line with water or saliva before tying any knot on flouro.
The heat caused by friction will limit knot strength.

buy a different flouro! berkly vanish is junk. if you have money to spend buy seagar, or trilene 100% flouro.

Double uni for all line to line connections, regardless if its braid, mono, or flouro. The only difference is the number of wraps depending on the line material, 5 of mono or flouro and 6-7 wraps on braid depending on the thickness to prevent slipage.
