Homemade traps (Updated)
« on: Mar 16, 2011, 06:07 AM »
SO here is the finish product (right in time for ice out  :-\)  I'm very happy with the out come.  These are a hybrid between Jack Traps, Heritage, and 40 Up Traps.  I do have a question for Heritage guys.....have you ever felt the need to file the piece that hols the flag down a little bit?  Seems like it takes a bit of force to actually release the flag.  Just wondering if anyone else had this same issue.

Those look nice!

But I don't see where you call them a mix-breed. They look like home-made cross brace Heritage, nothing else.
Heritage release, Heritage grease tube and rod, and generic (?) metal spool. If it's a Jack or 40-up spool, what you have is still a home-made Heritage.

Any old way,,, good job!

traps look great and yes I have had to file my heritage traps slightly to make them trip smoother.

i twisted the point up with pliers, catching percentage went way down when i got those traps until i fixed the release and its easier to twist the sping on the flag if you need more or less resistance. yes, fix the release, its lousy for light biting fish that spook

Nice set of traps! Ive got to modify mine in the offseason as well.  I like the heritage traps for the most part but the reel system is junk.  They will all have thru-bolts holding the reels on for next season.  Great job.

Those look great
I made 6 of my own Jack Trap style this winter.  May make 6 Heritage Cross style this summer (time permitting).
Thanks for the inspiration.  Here are my Jack Trap style:

I have a Jack Trap Grease tube I had to modify, Heritage Flag set up, and a 40 Up reel assembly.  There were things, speciically with Jack Traps and Heritage that I liked that I wanted to use...the 40 Up reeal was just a cost thing....but it seems like a mix breed to me....just sayin.  ;D

Well mongrels usually make better pets so they say and so I've seen. So they should work fine for you once you get the trip where you want it.

Consider this if you haven't filed the trip mechanism yet. If you put a thin card or similar under the grease tube up near the release you will change the amount of force needed to push the flag off it's 'perch'. Also is you can increase the distance at the spool from the grease tube you'll increase the fulcrum leverage advantage. Either or both of these will make it trip lighter and if you ever want to use a big bait say, for Pike, you can return it to original if you get bait flags from it being too sensitive.

I think the Heritage grease tube's center line sits further away from the wood and this gives it a slight leverage advantage over a smaller diameter one that would sit closer. This is the way it is between my Thompson's and Moosehead's versus my Heritage traps. Rather than file it down and make it too sensitive for later use with big bait, I'd try to make it adjustable. Then you'd have the best of both worlds. I can understand removing any burrs or rough areas, but altering the actual curve in the release, you may want to approach with caution.

Nice!  You must have access to metal working tools?  I really wanted to make some of my parts but I have nothing in terms of that stuff

Very nice traps Lion, looks like mahogany? Almost too pretty to put to use.

Great looking traps in all the other posts also.

I really like homemade stuff. Here's a post of home made traps my neighbor made for me years ago.

That would put a whole new take on the 'Unattended trap' issue if it went to court. Just drag one of those into the courtroom with you. I'm sure the judge would take one look and say, "Case Dismissed!"  :woot: :woot:
