Not everybody does.  I see people leaving them on the ice to die.

From what I've seen, it's usually someone who sets up their wheelhouse and then leaves.  I usually see the wheelhouse imprint and then a fish or two just left behind.  A total waste.

Also called a cusk....poor man's lobster.  One of the best eating fish you'll ever have.  Look it up...has about 12 nicknames.  It's a cusk to me though ;)

They should try stocking lakes with Eelpout, considering how good eatin' they are. But I've never heard of them stocking them.

lawyers, dogfish, mariah...don't matter what ya call em they're damn good eatin'!  fun to catch too i might add.  i've even scavenged burbot that people left behind, better than going to waste.

Interesting, never heard the other names...  In Minnesota a dogfish is usually referring to a bowfin.  Just like we often call a freshwater drum a sheephead; which in salt water is a completely different fish.  Didn't want people to get confused if they look up dogfish and see something different.

yep regional linguistics are quite the thing.  most people up here call walleye pickeral and you get looked at sideways if you use the proper term.

Cusk (Burbot) provide a super night of ice fishing!  One of the best tasting fish you can try.  I can't imagine anyone wasting one.

Eelpout are saltwater fish.  What we catch in freshwater here are burbot (cousin to the saltwater cod eelpout) and mighty delicious.  It's a sin to leave them behind on the ice.
