Jigging Rap for Perch
« on: Jan 22, 2011, 04:31 PM »
Need to know what everyone is using for color and size for perch.  I'm doing all my perch fishing in 25+ feet of water.

Thanks in advance

#2, usually to start, sometimes a bit bigger if needed. Color depends on the day and the forage in that particular lake. Gold, silver, perch/tiger are basics from there it's up to you http://www.fishusa.com/Rapala-Jigging-Rap-Balanced-Jigging-Lures_p.html

#2 glow red tiger and glow green tiger have produced for me.  I'm sure anything orange, gold, or silver will work too because I generally will use gold or silver during the daytime.

I try Clown Color first, then move to perch and orange.

Hope this helps,

#2 in firetiger is my first choice, but I usually fish murkier water.  Tip with some maggots or a minnow head and if the fish are aggressive, then I dont even bother with bait.  Jigging Raps are my favorite search bait, and you can catch anything on them

Just where do you fish?

Up here, you'd never fill a bucket using a set up like that, usually a drop shot rig with a couple gold hooks works wonders.

I go "fancy" with a #4 Swedish pimple, a split ring and a #4 Caty jig with a perch eye.  It gets to the bottom fast and when the bite is on, usually it doesn't even make it to bottom and there's already another perch hooked up.

I start with a small blue/silver rap. The active fish will crush it. I then go to a jig and waxie with a spring bobber. Pressured Perch are tentative biters, from my experience. I start big and then scale down until I start getting bit.

Smallest size jigging rapala in Perch color. Treble hook tipped with one waxie. Works for me.

I have one rod that I keep a blue/silver #2 rap on it.  I never take it off.  Usually start with a search lure.  But often they hit the rap hard.
bluegill seem to prefer a red on right at sundown.
