IN THE DRINK
« on: Jan 21, 2011, 08:36 AM »
Gotta text message 4 a.m. this morninig that a buddy backed out on me to hit a new pond we found out about. So I figured I would just head across the street from where I live.  Went thru upto my pecs. This small  5 acre pond has springs in it and is known for sketchy ice. But I know what Im doing, been doing it for a while and getting away with it. Especially how cold its been. Any how, Im not posting this for ja comments or the genuis award of the week. Im posting it because I know a handful of guys that ice fish it and thought Id give them a heads up. I live on this pond and thought I had it figured out. Yesturday I fished it for a few hours ice was 5". So I was sure Id be fine, just follow the known path. Notice the sled tracks past the hole from my scout from previous trips. The farthest picture is close to my spot where you can see a noticable spring pushing through. Anyhow its about 15' deep where I went through. Thankfully GOD got me out. Thats my last time ice fishing this place. Simply not worth it. This pond is dug out like a bowl for I-94. Gets deep fast and has stronger springs than what I thought. That light cracking sound before the plunge will haunt  me for a while, never been through other than 2-3' on shore before. Hopefully, my gear will dry on the low no heat setting in the dryer so I can try a Valpo Lake tonight.

Notice the scout sled tracks from previous trips

The fish are stacked up near this spring in the middle of the pond for obvious reasons, good bite if you got the cohonies, I lost mine this morning

FAST.......I never really felt 100% safe on this pond so its always on your mind to be ready for it, if that makes any sense. I was probably out within 15 seconds/ didnt use the picks, natural reaction was to use forearms and that kicking your legs thing in the video does seem to work

That crinkly plastic sound just before the plunge is very memorable. Been through 6 times or more last  couple that noise was the warning I did not heed.

Brrrrrrrrrrrr. :o   Glad you made it out.   That's why I bought a AA suit. :angel When in doubt, drill a test hole.  :icefish: I hate any  pond with a spring. the water under the ice is always warmer.thus it melts from the top and bottom.Unless it has been extremely cold from a long time. Thanks for sharing, maybe someone else will benefit from this.

Glad you got out quickly and safely.
Been there done that on Ketchel's pond off Rt#149 north of Rt#6 just north of toll road about 20 years ago. Was in water 1 1/2 hours before was rescued.
Springs are really unpredictable.
No longer fish alone on ice.
God bless!

Thanks for the graphic posting. The tracks up to the opening tell the story.  It's a warning I've needed as I too have been getting a "little complacent" lately.

Interesting.  Ive been hitting springs on my honey hole too.  Thats where ive been tearing them up since the season began.  Generally, they have a small hole in the middle i will enlarge with a hand auger.  (First time out i tied off to a tree, as i was alone)   I took a member from the board there a while back and he recorded 37deg under our feet.

I have yet to do less than 40 bg <7" from 3pm to 6pm.  Its one of those start with 3 poles and lucky to run one type of hole.  Drawback?  Falling in 4 fow... at best.  I can live with it, literally, but would rather fish that place only with company, or at least only in my one spot just a few feet off shore.  Falling in here wouldnt be fatal, but it would definitely be inconvenient.

I went all the way under when i was a kid on Camp 5 in northern WI and had to ride a 20" bike 3/4 a mile home.  Two things i remember most.  I could see forever under the ice, and Mom wouldnt let me beyond the ante-way (like a coat room, attached to the house, but not in it).  She came back with a blow drier and made me thaw myself out before coming in to the house.

I saw that wet spot as I drove to work this morning.  Never thought someone went through.  Glad you are ok. I was just mentioning to a friend how that lake seems to freeze last and thaw first.

Glad yer ok H2O... ive fished there many many times as a youngster, as i grew up in CHESTERTON/Porter. I fell thru a long time ago myself, in both Pratt lakes. My mom lives just west of yost school in that newer subdivision, i always remember goin thru when i pass the pond, eliminating that~~ "i should try it feeling".

Glad you are OK. What a morning to go through - like any morning is better!  Coldest day of the year here - sure it was as cold or colder up there.
