Just bought a Jason Mitchell Meatstick rod...
« on: Jan 10, 2011, 04:12 PM »
question is... it doesnt come with clips to secure a reel to the rod... so how do you guys secure the reel to the rod? can you buy clips for these rods (the cork is fatter then most jig rods)? or do you just use tape? any help would be appreciated

electric tape, cable ties (not my favorite), or you can also get some shrink wrap pieces (i know st. croix supplied them with their rods)

If the bands came with the pole, they are probably shrink bands. My St. Croix came with black shrink bands.

Mine became 3" shorter on the first outing. The tip just broke. POS in my opinion.

It was sensitive for sure. My biggest complaint was the lack of service when I took it back to their booth at the Syracuse show. The rep said." Yeah, they've had some problems like that". That's all...no offer for replacement. I didn't demand either. At that point I 'd already decided not to deal with that company again.

Never had a problem with a Yad rod....for 1/3 the price of JM's expensive junk.

I broke my meatstick the other day, the tip is super sensative, my gill jig got slammed by a pike and the rod tip shredded. I have not called in yet to see what I can do

RG let me know what the name of those rods are please. I would love to try them. I really like my meatsticks but would definitely be willing to try others. I use the ST Croixs some but not the lengend, to much money.

give them a shot some time, the spring bobber on the legend is th best on the market in my opinon. The rods are good, perfect length and strength for the spring bobber

I just bought 2 of them, and have nothing but positives to say. 20" model made short work of a 21" laker.

reason i went with their spring model, is the comments here about the brittle meat stick tip. The spring model is VERY sensitive, but only when you do not use the spring bobber. When jigging for crappie that hit hard, i just run my line through the last eye and not use the spring bobber. when i deadstick, i go with the spring, seems to be a good compromise rod that has a strong backbone. quite happy with it so far.

Where?  I can always use a couple more Legends.  It makes me feel better when I can get them for less than $50!  "Oh look, they're on sale!  Better pick up a couple more at that price!.... But Honey, they were on sale!"

As much as I like the idea and affordability of the JM Meatstick rod, I will not be replacing the one that broke on me (repaired and shorter).  Nice flexible tip.  Very dull on sensitivity and barely felt fish bite. The backbone for pulling up big fish is good.  The new candy stripe tip should help with visual detection.  And also appears they have a lighter and longer handle on them now.

electrical tape. I only have one out of about 10 rods that actually have rod seats on them. all the rest are taped, including my 2 meatsticks. no problem.

Just threw 2 JM reels in the garbage,,,rods went some time ago. Won't go through another season of the line getting tangled in the spool or
the bail not closing properly, lost too many fish! :'(

You do realize you just brought back a two year old thread right?

I was on a bus and just happened to be sitting on a news paper. This guy came up and asked. "Are you reading that ?"
I said  yes, stood up, turned the page and sat back down.

I have a ML st. Croix legend. I like the spring, and actually made the tips to insert springs  onto other rods. I even have made my own springs.  I found I can by an $8 ht shanty rod, and make a st croix spring bobber tip and a spring for it. Total investment is under $15. Plus it works extremely well.
