we use them on bago and poygan with great success.... We referr to them as umbrella tip ups. Not sure if this is what you are looking for? You need to find an umbrella that has framework made up of 90 degree angles in it somewhere that are long enough. Than tear apart the umbrella and go to work. I use nuts and washers as counter weights and duck tape as a flag. The duct tape can be rolled up on the pole very tight and the weights can be changed out to offer more or less restriction. hope i helped.

hey jeff, unless some one has come up with a better plan. We keep the setting tight on the reel so there isnt any free spool for the fish to run. They work great on walleye. perch, crappie...Anything else and you can kiss them goodbeye. We a good pair of boots that you can run like heck in.....

There is a slot cut in the front of the tip up for part of the frame from the umbrella to sit in. I have mine stapled in place. These are great for eyes as walleye have a tendency to just suck the minnow in and sit there. If a fish takes it that likes to run you can jsut about kiss the tip up good bye

its really good when the counter weights (nuts and bolts) slide forward than there is literally zero resistance unlike a underwater that always has some slight resistance.

not sure i understand how the wire sits on the top. can you show a close up? also, how do you get this thing to stand up on the ice?

thanks.

thats where the hinge is on the umbrella wire the 90 degree part he talked about is stapled or nailed in the groove and the hinge sits right on top of the board. think that is right .

You need to find an umbrella that can supply a 90 degree angle or a "T"....The previous poster is correct about how it is fastened. The "T" sits in the groove.

We pack sluch around the base of the tip up to hold it upright. This is defianly a welfare tipup but they work great.

When a walleye hits one of these tip ups many times the flag will only go up a few inches or sit at a perfect 90 degree angle to the ice while they chew on it. Its nice because they line is above the water so its quick and easy to grab instead of having to fumble with an underwater tipup and the fish feeling it and dropping it. DO NOT put these far from your sahck. You have to be able to get to these tip ups fast. We never put them further than 15 yds from our shack.

Looks to me like you could use a heavier gauge brazing rod/welding rod to do the same thing.
Just have to modify the ends. flatten & drill or loop them.
Store bought Screen door turnbuckles could be used also I'd think.

You wouldn't have the "hinge" part, but I'm sure you could think of a good way to make it tilt & not slide.
Have fun.

I originally was going to use some rod from work but thought it would be 10x easier to buy an umbrella for 5$ and be done with it. Get 1 good umbrella and you can make 8 tip ups pretty quick. I found my umbrella at wal mart....

Just finished some did not try them yet, soon I hope. As far as using some other material such as welding rod why reinvent the wheel?
