ice fishin equipment [ wish list]
« on: Dec 31, 2010, 03:44 PM »
If you were given  300 bucks and told you had to spend it on ice fishing gear, what one item would you choose to get ? something that you feel would greatly increase your fishing skills ? ,or maybe something you would love to have , to make your ice time more comfy ? ..

   KEEP IT CLEAN...  LOL

One word reply.   FLASHER.     Of almost any make, vex, bird, marcum, low.  Not One single item will have a greater impact on turning fishing into catching.  Then of course the answer for next years 300 buck budget would be a flipover shanty, lol.  I would buy the flasher for many reasons, # 1.  it will increase your catching.  #2.  It is very easily to resell a flasher if you find ice fishing aint for you.  #3.  If you realize that with the help of the flasher you do enjoy icefishing, its gonna be real easy to find the cash for the shanty, lol ;) trust me.

based on my current wants/needs...it would probably be very close between a handheld GPS with a lake map chip of some type or an underwater camera!!! either would be a good addition to the rest of my ice fishing gear!!!

It's a fine line between fishing & sitting on the ice like an idiot

Well, as bubbagill said, a flasher would be the best, but since I already got one I would get a real shanty instead of my hunting blind or a nice hand auger, although that would be under 300.

flasher... Although most of this season i have not used it(fl18), since most of the fish I caught have been in 4fow!

Edit*  technique and presentation imo is the 2 most important aspects to fishin... then the flasher, to help you locate em'. Everything else is just a matter of preference...

After buying a new 4 wheeler and just up grading to the fl-20 I don't need to much more. So I think I would put the money into a good gps . But like all the others said if you don't have a flasher that is what you need to be looking at to put more fish on the ice

All great ideas, consensus might be the vex as first choice, sounds like a lot of confidence in it . however i think Joe has got it all together .!  good thinkin with the arctic armor though .  lm still listening for any other ideas. kinda suprized that there arent more icers choosing a shanty.   or you guys already have one..
I like a shanty but , that kinda makes me want to grow roots... I like to move if it aint happenin. hate to die in one spot.

power auger is the only thing i don't have
Chance is always powerful. Let your hook be always cast in the pool where you least expect it, there will be a fish.

Hmmm... that's a tough one since I already have almost everything I really need.

1.  Put the $$ towards an Ice Gator
2.  Put the $$ towards the new Vex color camera
3.  Spend the money on a trip to fish with the Perch Patrol.

Earlier this week I would have said cold weather gear, as of Wednesday I must say a power auger.  I think I really tore up my rotator cuff, the Lazer came to a halt, but the arms kept going, heard/felt something weird, now it's painful to use auger, put on clothes, and making left turns gives a sharp pain.

Real fisherman don't yield to the weather.

I would recommend a flasher.  I just bought my first flasher about a week ago and went fishing the very next day.  We must've drilled 25 holes all over this pond until we found the fish.  Once we found them we were pulling them out just as fast as we could get the line in the water.  The fish were all holding in the one deep hole in that pond, and it wasn't a very wide hole.  So I don't think we would've caught a thing without a flasher unless we were lucky enough to drill in the right spot.  By the way I bought the Humminbird 345 ic and really liked it a lot.  I think it was around 320.00 for the unit.

Thats why I bought the power auger, getting harder on the body to crank out them holes manually.  The AA suit is a good idea also, that will probably be next now that it was mentioned.

Flasher for under $300-the Marcum LX3-Same as the Vex FL18 with the bottom zoom- alot cheaper.  Since I got that the next $300 or less will go towards a gas powered auger.

Got the Vex
then the Ice Gator
then the shanty
sold the shanty

Now would be a Marcum Camera. I think you could have a blast even if the fish weren't cooperative.

I have my Lowrance X67C so I don't need a fish finder..

I have a fishtrap scout but end up hole hopping on my bucket most of the time so no need there...

I guess I would upgrade to an 8 or 9 inch power auger or an underwater camera.  Would like the larger auger for when I am tipup fishing and sight fishing but don't want to have to work that hard for when the ice gets over 6in thick.  And I have always wanted a camera.
