My homemade ice fishing sled
« on: Dec 12, 2010, 11:01 AM »
Thanksgiving weekend I started tinkering to make my ice fishing sled.     Looking at all the ideas on IceShanty.com,  I came up with this design.

I liked the design for a couple reasons.   1.  I had the old cooler to use.   2.  having the platform keeps my feet off the ice.

This is the sled loaded down.   Spudbar,  shovel, buckets  all secured with rope and clips,  rodcase.   I used old downhill skis for the skids.

It works pretty well.   I used the natural curve in the skis at the front of the sled to carry the rodcase when in transport.   I also put some straps on the back of the cooler to hang my auger for transport.

This is my homemade rod carrying case.  I used 6 inch  pvc pipe that I had laying around.   I also used piano hinge that  was scrap.  the only thing I bought were the clip/latches.  I used a strap off an old bookbag for the sling.  Per some discussions Iceshanty.com,  I used some 3/4 in black flexible hose to encase the individual rods, in order to prevent tangling the lines

Pretty much everything was scrap.  I only bought the latches and obviously some paint to create my "snow-stealth-camo".

The whole sled is 30 inches long.    I built a second one for my ice fishing buddy.   The two set side by side were designed to fit beside each other and fit inside a hub shelter.

I took it out this morning for the first time.  It worked great!

5 inches of Ice in SE Iowa,  20 below windchill.    Anxious to get my hub shelter and vex in a couple weeks!

Thanks for all the inspiring ideas.   This site is about as addicting as ice fishing itself!!!

Looks great! I would have raised the bed a bit, soft snow or slush will be in the way.

What sled?  I can't see it. ;)

Good idea for a rod case!  But, again, I can't see it!

Inside the cooler,  I mounted a 2x2 with a couple holes drilled in it to hold two rod holders.   I made 2 rodholders (see front of sled) using some 1 1/2 in pvc  with a 4 inch carriage bolt.   I drilled a hole in the edge of the sled and bent the bolt to be a swivel rod holder.   I drilled 5 holes across the front for different postitions.       On the 2x2,  I plan to drill a couple holes to hold a socket for my cordless drill.  The socket is to drill in ice anchors for the hub.

Once i have the Vex,  I will customize a spot in the cooler for it and my heater.

The sled also has big eyebolt lags along the base..........2 on each side.   These are to strap a hub or shanty on the top.

Nice sled!  I really like your home made rod case.  I have some 6" pvc that was in the garage when I bought my house, and a piano hinge laying in my scrap project box in the garage.  I can take a latch off an old drywall banjo I have in my garage that doesn't get used anymore.  I may have to make some thing similar this week instead of spending $40 on a new rod case!

Nice job. That ranks right up there with Smitty's as one of the nicest sleds I've seen.

Paint Job:   pretty simple......Flat black spray paint base, then flat white spray paint just randomly applied.    No worries about it not being visible to others.....(not being hit by a snowmobile as one response said).     I am on farm ponds, where I am the only one there!

Thanks all for the comments.   We are making ice today!   below zero temps this morning...PLUS WIND!
