Thanks Ryan, and Earl for conditions and reports. Hope we will be good for the weekend. Maybe one of these years we will see a few 12 - 13" perch! They have to be in there?? I get a few out of a 1/2 acre pond with big walleye, and catfish. My best 1 9 1/2" fat as a beer can! That's after catching thousands. They taste good though!

Can't wait to hear how today was on Long Point... Wanted to play hookey but the wind and freezing rain kept me at work.  I hope the ice makes it through this week

Hey Everyone! I am new to this site and somewhat new to ice fishing.  My son and I are looking to go out on Saturday 1/14.  We have a place in Ashville and are looking to stay close by.  We will be happy catching any panfish for first time out so I think we will be our near Smith boys.  Any tips on what depth to be fishing at.  Thanks.

Other than the 4 nice sized crappie I got so far its been a dink fest here at Chautauqua. I cant believe the amount of small perch that are in this lake.

Chauatauqua is full of little perch.  Its hard to keep them off your line a times.  I tried bottom bouncing for walleye last year and picked up some decent size perch but no walleye.  They are fun to catch if you are with kids because it can be nonstop action.  You just have to sort through them.  8-10" are eater size there and the 10" is a rarity

My best Perch has been a 9 1/4". That`s after thousands caught. I have caught 13"+ in a 1/2 acre pond. My guess is even with walleye and muskie stocking there are too many prey, and not enough food for them so they stunt. I have seen the same in ponds. Tons of skinny bass, and the owner wants to try something else, and keeps every bass he can. Within a couple of years you have a few 5# bass. More food for a few fish. Still you would expect a few monster perch, but yet to see one.

Other than keeping every single perch caught is there a way to increase the quality of the perch? Ended up with 6 crappie and about a dozen decent perch to take home. Musta threw back 100 perch today.

I'm thinking the amount and size of the walleye population should put a dent in them perch. May take a few years but it's going to happen.

I will say every fish I catch is very healthy in Chautauqua lake.  The walleye, largemouth bass, smallies and panfish like crappie and bluegill are eating well.  I dont mind the perch in the lake.  The trouble is that when you fish Lake Erie and catch a day of everything 12+ inches with some 14" the dinks that you catch can be aggravating.  I have 2 kids and when they can catch their share of dinks it makes their day.

Haven't been up for a few winters.
Any idea about Pretendergast ???

May head to Chautauqua if Kinzua blows out from the rain and melt this weekend. :P
If I was a boat fisherman that sucked so badly that my whole summer of fishing sucked, I would blame it on those ice fisherman guys.

I feel Deja Vu from last year. Never made it out because a decent cold streak was always ruined by a warm spell the week that i could actually go!

you guys think it will hold up at LP for this weekend. Its not very often i get a kitchen pass nowadays and i did a ton of chores to give myself a free weekend! haha

Dunno - It was start to get sloppy when we left and windy. I would b careful if u go.
My son caught a silverish fish yesterday. Not no crappie. Guy next to us said it was a shad or striped bass?
Kept losin our bait down there too. lot of little perch not big enough to try to clean. gots about 35 7-8 inch fish for the family.

Does anyone know if the perch in Chautauqua are the same strain as in Lake Erie? If different then that could be why they are a much smaller.

Chautauqua has grass perch...Lake Erie has jack perch. At least that's what my dad used to tell me many years ago.
