ICE FLIES

Just curious, how many I.S. members use them. They are fun watching them when site fishing. Best part, you dont have to use bait.

I started sight fishing with them last season, very cool to see a crappie inhale your fly 3 feet under  the ice

Made a few myself last year but didn't get out but 2-3 times. Did catch some fish on them though. Hopefully i will get out more this year. I know them old timers definately know some tricks when the bite is tuff, and they are still filling buckets.

I have been a fan of flies for a couple of years, as stated great for sightfishing and handy for picky eaters too.  Seems like after a month or so fish figure out the stiff up and down motion of leadheads, and the light flutter of unwieghted flies wins out.

I have been known to use (and make) a few ice flies in the past several years.  I know they will usually outfish other lures unless the fish are feeding heavily then they will bite about anything.  I have seen them catch fish in a crowd when others are getting only a few bites or only small ones.  I don't like them in water over 15 ft. because of how light they are and how long they take to get down.  They are my go to for pressured fish or when sight fishing gills or crappies.

i don't even fish over 15 ft in my bass boat!! ;D

seem to work everywhere i've ever fished. on those days the fish are on fire i will use a chunk of lead (tear drop or rocker) but mostly tie on a fly and go!!
Lack of planning on your part in NO way constitutes an EMERGENCY on mine

Favorite method for taking panfish.  Prefer sight fishing with the fly but do about an equal amount of line and spring watchin.  Agree with the deep water disadvantage.  Some folks say put on some split shot to go deep but I've always felt that the split shop kills the action of the fly but this is an option.  Also very low water clarity will generally lead me more towards a jig w/bait but depends on where I'm fishing also.
