It's Here.
« on: Oct 15, 2010, 09:53 PM »
Oh, look what I found...

Didn't really plan on hardwater when we left the house this morning.  At least the spade came in handy.

Yep.  Silvers sucked on the clearwater so we broke the poles in half, broke out the shovel, and dug a hole in 2-1/2" of ice...  Hit paydirt.

Not military, just farm boys that aren't smart enough to know any better.  We were close to Donnely Dome.  I'm glad the snow wasn't any deeper back there or it looks like it would get a little nasty.  Ice was about 3".  Must have been enough, little brother (weighs about 230) fell flat on his @$$ and didn't go through.  Not that the blackberry brandy would have anything to do with it, it was slick out there afterall.  Went out yesterday closer to town & found a few lakes with around 2" of clear ice.  Funny thing is, we sounded like a bunch of kids just happy to be catching 12" bows through the ice.  I think I'm an addict, now that I've had a taste it's all I can think about.  Definitely going to be ditching some work next week.

It doesn't get much more hardcore than someone willing to pound a hole through 2" of new ice with a shovel to get at them !!  :woot:

Holy smokes...nicely done!!!  I usually check into the Shanty early in the year, but waited this year so I wouldn't go so crazy with anticipation....but your post ruined all that.  Bring the ice this way!!!!

Got out for a few hours today and caught some dink trout to pass the time while we waited for a pike.  Had a flag go up on a tip-up with herring.  By the time I got there must have had 20' of line stripped out.  Got him within a couple feet of the hole before he spit the hook.  Anyway, there was another 1" or so of ice and it's only going to get better from here.  Plan on going down south a ways again tomorrow.  Maybe I'll take a look at Quartz if we head back halfway early.  Any tips for enticing grayling?  Never caught any through the ice myself, so that's probably what I'll be gunning for at least part of the day.

Why not?

Almost got to hit Quartz, but the flock of birds in the lake made us a little leary...

Did get my first grayling through the ice, plus a few more.

Must have been the hog I missed the other day.

Of course, the dirty SOB I took with had to show me up.

Not long till we get to hit something other than puddles, maybe next week??
