Mono or Braided Line?
« on: Feb 12, 2010, 05:31 PM »
What do you guys like to use for line when Jigging for deep water Lake trout, mono or braided line? I am using mono right now and like it, but have heard that braided is better for setting the hook in deep water bc braided line does not have as much stretch as mono does, plus you can feel a bit more with braided. Also heard that braided is a pain, if you get a tangle.

I use the power pro with no leader for jigging also.  For traps I use a 15lb fluorocarbon, haven't had a problem with hooksets with it.

Braid increases the sensitivity and hook setting power, which is good on most days.  I have also seen days where the fish actually feel you first because of the low stretch and spit the jig faster than anybody can react...it is those days when "stretchier" lines work better (I like copolymers that have less stretch than mono but are still easy to work with).  Those days are frustrating...you can feel them, but can't hook them!

I have landed hundreds of lakers on 8 lb Yo-zuri hybrid and don't see any reason to change.  I can easily feel a laker take a jig in 120+ feet of water with it.  Because it stretches less than regular mono, hook setting power is improved.  Sometimes a little stretch is good when fighting big fish as well.

I would imagine if you are fishing in very deep water (200+ feet), the braid would be the better choice on most days.

Fluoro, copolymers, braid...they all have their uses, and it can vary day by day!  I almost never go with straight mono any more after finding some of these copolymers and finding some of them greatly superior in every way (even suppleness).

I use 20 pound braided, it is the same diameter of 4 pound mono and it is very resistant to abrasion and has no memory.

Braid with mono shock leader.  Flouro is overrated and has too much memory

I don't see a use for Mono any more now that you can get great braided line like Power-Pro or Fire Line Chrystal which have high strength and no stretch for instant hook sets.  I use 10lb Power-Pro Ice braid with a 4ft Fluorocarbon leader (Trilene) for Walleye and would think you could use the same set up for Lakers...  The Fluorocarbon if more abrasion resistant then the braid which you want if the fish has teeth!

and mono doesn't have memory? flouro has memory yes, but less then mono. flouro is also much more abrasion resistant then mono. to each his own i guess.

True, both have memory but if you get a knick in flouro forget about it, it will break off just like that. And  for the cost of flouro I am all set.  The only place where i see flouro makes a difference is in striper fishing I have never noticed a difference in freshwater.  Mono has been around for years and has worked fine.  But like you said to each their own

Last year on big wood in jackman, I out fished 8 guys using flouro. The guys were getting mad because I was the only getting all the flags. They kept asking was my secret was. Finally on the last day, i unveiled my secret. 6 pound flouro! I must say it makes a difference.

I use rubber bands all strung together, I think I read something once on rubber bands on this site for togue, so figured it must work for jigging too, am I doing something wrong ;D ;D
