My grandfather made a great one out of an axle shaft (about 1-1/8" dia.) about 5 feet long little heavy to drag around but it works great, fortunately he also bent and flattened one end like a pry bar and now we mostly use it to move big machines a little at a time.  What a multy-tool.  "give me a big enough lever..."

Got mine at Home Depot...I went to the local and they had homemade ones for around $32....they were short for me ( I am 6'2") and hollow....no heft. I went to HD and found tucked away in a corner, what they call Digging/Tamping bars. this thing is about 6 foot tall, black and pretty solid.
I have no problem hefting it around, but you could easily mod it (cut off part of it) to suit you if needed. It is SOLID and does the job great....best part...cost the same as the "homemade" ones. Hot tip....either drill a hole through it or tie some kind of a strap on it....if you punch through in one hit....you could lose it from the momentum....also works great to take the edge off your holes if they weren't augered as straight as you would like.

Made mine out of a old torsion bar out of a durango.  Torched the tip to a chisel and shined it upp with a grinder.  works great.  You use a spud bar to chisel a hole in the ice or break open old holes.  Early and late ice you walk with it and smack it in front of you to see how your next step will be.

They had them at Gander Mountain! Not sure of the price, but they were there. This is the Valpo area, but may want to check your gander!
