Displaying fish on the ice
« on: Jan 21, 2010, 10:30 AM »
Does anyone have anything special they do with their fish after they catch them?  I usually just pile mine on the ice for a while until they stop kicking then bag them up.  The only problem is the attention it attracts if others aren't catching any.  You get close neighbors real quick.  My grandpa was an expert at catching a fish, unhooking it, putting it in his bucket and be back in the hole before anyone knew what happened.

Lets go get em

Hide em! I always bring my ol green bucket and never let more than a few fish flop on the ice at once. If you got a pile of fish laying on the ice, guys that are glassin or coming out to fish will see your on fish. If you have no fish laying around then they will think your not catchin nothin.

They immediately go in the bucket for me.  I'll show someone if they come over and ask......but I don't want to display the mother load for all to see.

I put mine in a bucket with an old towel in the bottom of it so if they want to flop let them no one will here them.

Hide them in a bucket and deny everything. Just kidding, except the hiding part. Always willing to help someone catch fish.

I got a buddy that likes to leave them lay on the ice. I told him the other day that he might as well get a flashing neon sign that says WE ARE CATCHING FISH OVER HERE.

40lb salt sack. Takes up basically no room until you fill it up with fish. Just trow it away at the end of the day. I usually keep them in the back of the shanty, unless it's too warm then keep the sack on the ice.

I never had a problem with fish on the ice cuz I'm still learning, have had a few people crowd close when I'm in my shanty. I have been on fish and set my shanty up on nice days where I couldn't find a fish and laugh when I see people crowding around an empty shanty and no fish. If someone ask where I found fish I do tell the truth but the decoy shanty is funny.

Just got to tell them that if there that close then they had better brought the brats and beer.
The more the marrier I say-lol. Doesn't mean they can catch your fish- maybe it was there spot yesterday-and the day before.
As long as they aint peeing in my shanty(or on it) I don't care.

I'm usually in a shanty so you can't see what I'm catching.  but if someone sees you in a shanty and not moving it all day they found your hot spot.  so make sure you go out and drill a few holes and act like they are not biting in there either.  Other wise I put them in a bucket packed with snow.  This also helps them from freezing solid and helps keep the slime off em.

I put mine in a bucket of water in the shanty as to not draw attention, if I don't catch enough to clean they go back down the hole no worse for wear ;D

I keep an old tin can in the sled to scoop lake water out of the hole to fill the bucket, the fish don't even know they're out of the lake ;D
