Girley Girl traps done! (pics)
« on: Jan 18, 2010, 03:26 PM »
Finally got the girls traps done. Tons of work when making this many. They painted them and put on small fish and bobbers. Just got to fine tune then on the ice. Spools are 3 1/2 inch aluminum, Ash wood, Carbon fiber arrow shafts and brass for the triggers and nylon for the flag release. Wife wanted the rip stop fabric for the flags. I don't think they will like Yellow after we start using them.  These work from gravity only. No springs.
I made 6 last year and used only them all winter. They worked better then I had hoped for. The new ones have a better trigger/release them mine. I might have to paint 5 of mine pink and steal wife's.

Those are some great looking traps - How the flag spring mechanism work?  Are those wooden flags?

No spring anyware. The flags work on counter weight made of steel..

Those are works of art. Interesting flag trip design. Do you have a pic with the flag up? Also do they work well on a windy day? You could have the next great patent on flag trip mechanism.

These traps can NOT have a wind flag! We used the first ones last year in 15 deg. with the wind blowing 20 to 25 mph. Had to dig the traps out every time we had a flag. Here is a picture from last years traps while I was making them.
I also want to say I have never had one of these traps freeze up. I was worried about it. I use mineral oil to lube them and it freeze proofed them.

Awesome!! If there isn't one on the market like it, you better get it there. Not that us ice fisherman will buy things they don't even need.... wait scratch that last comment, if it works better and catches more fish we will buy it. Could be your ticket to fishing every day, OK maybe not every day but more than most!!
Great job they look like some innovative tip ups..

No yard sale. I mount my own fish. That small one was one of my learning fish.  ;D

The rubber bands hold the hooks and keep the line tight and neat. Sticking the hooks into braided line is a big pain when the barb goes throught. I am trying to get the wife to take the extra 3 seconds to put  the bands on at pickup time. She is ALWAYS in a big hurry to pickup and go and then I have to untangle everything. Can't train em!

I do the same thing cwebs and it works well. I stole a bunch of my wifes old hair elastics and love them. I'd be curious to hear how you made your reels. I have some ash that my folks decided not to use for a staircase and was thinking of making another set. Thanks.
