Just found this:

PPH Story

SHAPLEIGH -- A Waterboro man is the holder of a new Maine record for the largest brook trout ever caught.

The Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife says the fish weighed just over 9 pounds. It was caught through the ice Jan. 8 by Patrick Coan of Waterboro on Mousam Lake in Shapleigh.

Who cares if it a stock fished, an 9 pound brook trout is 9 pound brook trout. stocked or not. Any ways what determines a stocked fish. If a stocked fish lays eggs and does that mean there hatch is wild with stocked parents, or are those fish considerd stocked fish. It doesnt matter. A nice trout is a nice trout  stocked or not.

I agree with the congratulations, and would like to know a little more.  How old does the state think this fish is.  When was it stocked, and how
did it live to the age it has, while other similar brook trout perish during the summer weather.  I realize that not being hooked contributed
a lot.

I suppose that this Brookie owned the best piece of bottom on Mousam, and any other fish that decided to make that there home
added to this fish's statistics.

I'll bet it was a cannibal.  I worked in a small hatchery once, raising brook trout...and when they are very young, the ones that outgrew the rest became cannibals and would eat the runts.  I can't imagine that brookie was more than 4-5 years old which is the normal life-spawn for a brookie.  It probably just grew really fast.  I would be interested to know their findings though.

I offer the following as my own personal theory as to how a brook trout of this size could be caught in this lake.

Not every rearing station is set up the same, but in some older ones occasionally some fish escape from the raceways end up in the deep settling tank that is at the end of all the raceways.  These fish live there for years and get huge by eating all of the left over food that gets washed their way.  They also live longer than they would in the wild because they are in a low stress environment and these fish end up much larger than they would get in the wild as a result.  I know of 7, 8 and 9 pound brookies that have been netted out like this before, some of them would have been close or over the state record.  These fish sometimes get an "unscheduled" stocking into a lake or river in the spring or fall.  It is my suspicion that this fish was one of these types.  Currently there are only a small handful of ponds in Maine that can grow 18+ inch stocked brook trout, and Mousam is not known as one of them, so I don't think this is a case of a put-and-grow fish, it was most likely stocked in the late fall.
