This guy I worked with tells this story all the time, and I think it's BS but it's funny. He's out on Saginaw Bay in Michigan spearing pike, and he allways takes his black lab with him as he lives on the shore, and can walk to his shack. A school of carp go through the hole, and the dog goes in after them. a couple of seconds after the dog goes in he hears yelling and screaming from the shanty next to his. So he goes outside and there stands two guys that were in the shanty holding their hearts, breathing hard, and his lab shaking water off, the dog had come up in their hole, and scared the $#!@ out of them. I laugh everytime I think of this story.

My uncle's dog used to do that all the time.  Unfortunately, this was also the dog's demise, as it couldn't find a hole to get back out of.

I can attest to the muskrat coming through the hole. I had one that kept poking his head through the hole so many times I finally gave up and had to move.

Oh yeah on the muskrat. Few years ago we hard a bunch of screaming and curses from a shack closeby. The guys came running out and shortly later the rat came running out of the shack and across the ice to an open hole.

Smelting for big old salt water rainbow smelts through the ice shacks with  race holes running the length of the shack and a 1ft to 18 inches wide is a big thing on Maine's tidal rivers and more than a beer or two have been consumed in these shacks.  So a guy once told me he was smelting late one night when all of the lines started going crazy at once,  he look down the hole and about made a new door in the side of the shack when he saw a hand grab the edge of the hole a couple seconds latter a head appeared and a old drunk fisherman pulled himself up into the shack. The old fisherman was completely hammered so as he went to pull up a fish he fell down the hole and  the current pulled him down stream to the next shack.  Lucky he didn't head out to sea

I heard that story on one of the early hunting and fishing shows in the 80s don't remember the show but it was from Michigan. I think the host got sued and the show was cancelled due to his on camera testing of doe in heat attractants vs his own urine
