If you could pick one lake in the interior to put a permanent house on (assuming you lived in North Pole) which one would it be? Just kicking around ideas for now

I'd say Birch or one on Chena or the lakes out on Eielson (if you can put one there). Birch would be my choice for a heavy house you plan on spending hours in then a small lighter one for Chena or Eielson. The reason I don't put a house on Chena lakes is because they get vandalized and often get burned down by idiots who are bored! If I did put one on Chena it would be nothing but a large crate and nothing would be left in it when I went to leave.

The easy fix for this is 10 or 20 cases of TNT stored in the hut.
That way while the bored idiots are watching their handywork they can get vaporized when it ignites!!!

I'd say Birch is your best bet, its a nice lake with lots of fish and they are not that hard to catch.  I love to fish Harding myself but you do lots of fishing and not so much catching there.

I was thinking of Birch but i have never caught anything with any size to it.  All small trout.  I usually fish out of the state houses.  Am i just in a bad area of the lake?  Are there any decent size fish in that lake. Otherwise i am leaning toward Quartz even though its much further. Definitely not Chena Lakes.

Transplant I'd go with Birch, Harding, or Quartz but I guess it depends on "what" you want to catch??  As for Birch not having big fish, I thought the same until this year.  My boys and I got into some really nice bows for that lake and lot's of them!  22"-25" fish were shocking to say the least!!!  We thought fish of this size were only limited to Quartz, but I was wrong...  Again, this was in the boat and not through the ice so finding them may be the trick!  Get away from all the shacks and be a little rogue.  We also hammered (C&R) some nice bows and char out of Quartz this year on the 4th.  Lots of fish hovering and over the 20" mark.  In MHO if you really want big fish, you'll stick with Harding and learn how to fish it.  I think it's one of the hardest lakes to fish through the ice, but well worth it. There are no fish in Lake Louise.  Whistling

The burgers are good at Trees place. If he has the BBQ pork sandwiches, try one, you will like it!

In my experience, there is nothing fast about Trees place (and sometimes not quiet either). My coffee is always full, meals are too big to eat, good conversation and sometimes something memorable happens. He takes good care of me and I give him my business. Don't drink his martinis, you will belch for a week.... not the pleasant belches either.

The fish are either on or off. It sucks knowing they they are there and not catching them. I have trouble moving when I know they are under the boat/ice, but it is the smart thing to do.

SO can you teach me how to fish it?  Fished there one time and not one bite.  Looking for somebody to loan me a clue on that lake.

I pulled a 36"er out of Harding but that was after many failed attempts at not catching a thing and long hours on a huge lake often by myself or about 5 or less people at the most. I never put a hard shanty out there because of having to relocate alot. I will put one on Birch and I am always lookiing for help on loading and unloading my ice house in exchange for some tips on helping you fish Harding for that elusive 4 foot laker Catchumall keeps telling me about...LOL Plus it holdsdecent Char too. I sometimes allow people to use my house on birch too... Grin

BD we will have to discuss our strategy for placing my hut on Birch with KP over some coffee and breakfast one morning on a day we can get together.

    Brad,
No sweat!  I would love to help deploy the on ice Walmart...  I believe that AKJW will be more than glad to assist in the operation as well.  First you should probably call Eielson to schedule a C-17 for our task, then breakfest! Grin Grin  I'm excited to begin the season.

    Mntrasnplant,
We will have to hook up!  I can assure you that the fish in the lake are there, but they seem much more educated than the average laker/char.  Putting your time in and becoming mobile helps!  Using a good flasher-finder helps too...  To be honest with you, I'd rather fish Harding in the summer rather than winter because you can easily release the fish, (and they re easy to catch...)  If you have a good lip landing (boca grip) tool, bring it!  I only C&R Harding and can tell you there's plenty of fish there, just be patient, something I can't do with my kids in tow... Wink
